New York Yankees 6 — Baltimore Orioles 10
After an outstanding comeback, an unbelievable response created tonight’s 10-6 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
David Phelps started tonight’s game, a big series opener against the closest competition in the division. Phelps had a rough 1st inning as 4 of the 8 batters to come the plate scored, including a 3-run home run by Matt Wieters that immediately put the Yankees into a big hole. Phelps would settle down and minimize the damage. He would allow one more run on a Robert Andino solo home run in the 4th inning. Phelps gave the Yankees just 4 innings after giving up 5 runs on 6 hits, including 2 home runs. The bullpen held out to hold the Orioles to just 1 more run through 3 innings, the run coming on Mark Reynolds home run off of Joba Chamberlain in the 6th inning. After the offense showed life in the 8th inning and rallied for a huge 5-run inning, the bullpen would be asked to hold the Orioles to a tie so the offense could complete the comeback. David Robertson was the first pitcher called upon and he could not hold the Orioles off the scoreboard. Orioles outfielder Adam Jones continues his outstanding season with a leadoff home run off of Robertson to start the 8th inning to give them the lead. After a Matt Wieters single, Mark Reynolds continues to destroy Yankees pitching with his second home run of the game. Robertson would be replaced without recording an out and Boone Logan would come in to face designated hitter, Chris Davis. As quick as Logan entered the game, Davis swung without hesitation and hit the first pitch for a home run. With one pitch, Logan gave up a run without recording an out as well so Girardi would need Derek Lowe to get the 3 outs to end the horrendous inning. The Yankees gave up 6 home runs tonight. Tonight was Mark Reynolds 3rd multi-home run game in his last 6 against the Yankees.
The offense was put into an early hole that was slowly overcome. Orioles starter Jason Hammel had the Yankees figured out with groundouts and strikeouts when the Yankees made an early attempt at scoring. The first run scored came on an inning that started with a line drive by Robinson Cano off of the right elbow of Hammel. Granderson would bring in Cano later with a single to center field. The Yankees would be down by 5 going into the 8th inning. A walk, a run-scoring double by Alex Rodriguez, and another walk would start the inning against Randy Wolf before the next reliever, Pedro Strop, would be brought in. Curtis Granderson would come though with a run-scoring single off the right-hander. A walk would load the bases and another walk on 4 straight pitches to pinch-hitter Chris Dickerson would bring in a run. Ichiro Suzuki would come through with a huge 2-run single to tie the game. Darren O’Day would be called on to face Derek Jeter with the go-ahead run on 3rd but the Yankees captain would pop out to end the inning. The Yankees could not respond to the 4-run response by the Orioles as they lose an extremely tough game. The offense rallied to score without home runs but the pitching continues to have a problem having a shutdown inning following the Yankees offense.
With the loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees are back to a tie with them on top of the American League East.
