Yankees game 137: Kuroda, McCann strong in win

Boston Red Sox 1 — New York Yankees 5

Hiroki Kuroda was very strong as the Yankees continue their hunt for October baseball.

After Kuroda pitched a 1-2-3 first inning, Derek Jeter hit a one-out single against Red Sox starter Anthony Ranaudo. Brett Gardner would bunt to get on base. Derek Jeter would attempt a steal of third as Ranaudo did not pay attention to him but Brett Gardner would get a poor jump from first and he would be caught in a rundown. Jeter, looking to make the move for home plate and possibly steal a run, would be caught at third and Gardner would be caught at second base for a very unusual double play involving two caught stealing to end an originally good start to the game.

Hiroki Kuroda would strike out the side in the second inning and the offense would back him up. With one out, Mark Teixeira hit a single to center field and Brian McCann would hit his 17th home run of the season. The two-run home run went into the second deck and just stayed fair to put the Yankees ahead. The Yankees scored another run in the fifth inning on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Jacoby Ellsbury.

The one mistake that Kuroda made started when he hitΒ  second baseman Jemile Weeks with a pitch. He would come around to score on a double by Brock Holt. Overall, Hiroki Kuroda was dominant. In seven innings, Hiroki Kuroda allowed one run on four hits while walking none and striking out eight. His sinker and splitter were working as they dived out of the strike zone, generating weak swings and poor contact.Β  He threw 95 pitches and 73 were strikes, outstanding ratio.

Anthony Ranaudo did not pitch that bad but the home run by Brian McCann was enough for the Yankees and Kuroda.

With one out in the seventh against reliever Alex Wilson, Jacoby Ellsbury would hit a deep fly ball over the glove of the diving Mookie Betts which allowed Ellsbury to get into third base standing for a triple. Derek Jeter would walk and Brett Gardner followed with a single through the drawn in infield. Brian McCann would add to his great night with his fourth hit of the night, bringing home Jeter for the fifth run of the night.

Dellin Betances would pitch a scoreless eighth inning that featured two strikeouts. David Robertson would come out for the non-save situation and got a pair of strikeouts to end tonight’s game and get the Yankees the win.
