Yankees game 137: Pitcher’s duel goes O’s way

Baltimore Orioles 2 โ€“ New York Yankees 1

The Yankees lost the tight pitcher’s duel with the Baltimore Orioles.

Through the first four innings, Masahiro Tanaka was dealing, striking out five and facing the minimum. For the Orioles, Kevin Gausman held the Yankees off the scoreboard too, though not without slim opportunities. In the first inning, Brian McCann walked and Alex Rodriguez reached with a single against the shifted infield but Gregory Bird struck out to end the inning. In the third inning, Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian McCann reached on a pair of singles but Alex Rodriguez flew out to center field, ending the inning.

In the fifth inning, Chris Davis walked to end Tanaka’s bid at perfection. He responded by striking out two before Matt Wieters hit a ground ball into the shift. Unfortunately for Tanaka, Didi Gregorius ranged far to his left, going for a ground ball to Stephen Drew, allowing the ball to go into right field for the first hit allowed by Tanaka. He finished off the inning without the run scoring.

In the sixth inning, Ryan Flaherty ended the scoreless pitcher’s duel with a solo home run to right field. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Alex Rodriguez tied the game when he hit his 30th home run of the season, the 15th time he reached 30th home runs in a season for his career.

Kevin Gausman allowed one run on six hits while walking one and striking out five in his five innings of work.

In the seventh inning, Jimmy Paredes reached on a single. Jonathan Schoop hit a rocket to third base where Brendan Ryan made a diving stop, starting an around-the-horn double play for a dazzling defensive gem. Despite a two-out double, J.J. Hardy grounded out to end the inning.

In eight innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed one run on six hits while walking one and striking out 10.

Chasen Shreve got the call in the ninth inning with the game tied but Chris Davis kept his hot bat going. On an opposite field solo home run, Davis put the Orioles ahead by one. Two batters reached in the inning before the Yankees got the first out. The next outs came on a strikeout and a close caught stealing base runner at third base. The double play was challenged but the call was upheld to end the inning.

Orioles closer Zach Britton set the Yankees down in order in the ninth inning to win the close pitcher’s duel in tonight’s game.
