Yankees game 138: Defense falters in series finale

Baltimore Orioles 5 – New York Yankees 3

A few lapses in defense proved costly in tonight’s game with the Orioles.

CC Sabathia made his return to the mound but started tonight’s game with a walk of Nolan Reimold. On a bad hop, Stephen Drew recovered on a ground ball, getting the out at first, but Reimold was allowed to advance to second base on a potential double play. After a second ground out advanced Reimold to third base, Chris Davis came through with a two-out single that put the Orioles ahead by one after one inning.

Ubaldo Jimenez started for the Baltimore Orioles and retired the first two batters but Carlos Beltran didn’t let the first inning go scoreless. On a 1-1 pitch, Carlos Beltran went the other way and the ball carried far and deep to left, just over the wall for a game-tying solo home run.

After a scoreless second inning, the bottom of the Yankees lineup got it going against Jimenez.

Didi Gregorius got on base the hard way when he was hit by a pitch. Stephen Drew followed with a single to put two on base with no outs. Jacoby Ellsbury grounded into a close force out at second base but Carlos Beltran kept the hits going with a single to center field. Gregorius and Ellsbury scored on the single and on a missed catch at home, Beltran took second base, on a two-run single to put the Yankees ahead. Unfortunately, Brian McCann struck out to end the inning.

Through three innings, Carlos Beltran was leading over the Orioles by a score of 3-1.

Sabathia allowed the first two to reach in the fourth inning but stranded them. In the fifth inning, he allowed the first two to reach again. Gerardo Parra advanced the runners into scoring position with a bunt but CC Sabathia settled down by striking out Manny Machado in a great sequence of pitches. Despite getting ahead against Chris Davis, the big Yankees lefty ended up hitting Davis with a pitch to load the bases. Sabathia was removed from the game with the bases loaded and two outs.

Adam Warren took the mound and did everything right, if his defense backed him up. On a ground ball to Chase Headley, the Yankees third baseman made a throw that was catchable but low to Stephen Drew at second base for a potential force out. Unfortunately, Drew did not come up with the ball and two runs scored on the error, tying the game at 3.

In 4 2/3 innings, CC Sabathia allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks while striking out five.

Not a bad start for the lefty that could have missed the remainder of the season.

Since the two-out, two-run single by Carlos Beltran in the third inning, Ubaldo Jimenez settled down. He retired the next 11 batters to come the plate. Dustin Ackley snapped the hitless streak for the Yankees with a two-out double but Didi Gregorius grounded out to end the seventh inning.

After ending the fifth inning, Adam Warren stayed in the game, keeping the Orioles off the board until the eighth inning

In the eighth inning, Steve Pearce burned Adam Warren. On the 47th pitch of his relief outing, Steve Pearce went deep to left center field for a solo home run to break the 3-3 tie.

The Baltimore Orioles added a run in the ninth inning against the combination of Nick Rumbelow and James Pazos but ultimately the home run was the difference maker.

Darren O’Day and Zach Britton got the eight and ninth inning, respectively. The Yankees went down in order and lost the game and the three-game series with the Orioles.

Win – Ubaldo Jimenez (11-9)

Loss – Adam Warren (6-6)
