Yankees game 138: Ninth inning magic in win

Boston Red Sox 4 — New York Yankees 5

After falling behind early, the Yankees would rally late to walk off in victory.

Chris Capuano got the call to start against one of his former teams. In the first inning, David Ortiz would get a hold of an inside pitch with two outs and he put it just into the short porch in right field to give the Red Sox the early lead. Two would reach in the second inning but Capuano would get out of it. David Ortiz would torment his former teammate one more time in the third inning. The second home run of the night came after a Mookie Betts single so the two-run home run put the Red Sox ahead by three after three innings.

The Yankees would need to figure out the struggling Brandon Workman, who entered tonight losing his last seven decisions.

After two scoreless innings, Ichiro Suzuki started the third inning with a single to left. Jacoby Ellsbury would walk to put two on for Derek Jeter. The Yankees shortstop would drive the ball to deep center field and it would go over the head of Mookie Betts. The two base runners would score and Jeter would be on second base with a two-run double. After a Brett Gardner strikeout, Carlos Beltran would come through with a two-out single to right field and the Yankees tied it up.

Chris Capuano would pitch a scoreless fourth inning but Brock Holt led of the fifth inning with a tie-breaking home run to right field, just out of the reach of Ichiro Suzuki. The crafty lefty would get one more out but he would be replaced against David Ortiz, considering the two home runs he surrendered earlier. In 4.1 innings, Chris Capuano allowed four runs on three home runs while walking one and striking out two.

Another former Red Sox pitcher, Rich Hill, would get David Ortiz this time around with a strike out. Esmil Rogers followed Hill’s one batter appearance with 1.2 scoreless innings. Rogers would exit with Christian Vazquez on second with one out in the seventh inning but Josh Outman would get Brock Holt out. With the runner now on third, Shawn Kelley would get the out to end the threat. He would return to the mound for the eighth inning to face the heart of the Red Sox order. He would get a fly out from David Ortiz and struck out Yoenis Cespedes and Mike Napoli on sharp sliders to keep the scoreless line moving out of the bullpen.

In the ninth inning, with the Yankees still trailing by one, Adam Warren came in and started the inning by hitting Allen Craig with a pitch. Xander Bogaerts would try to sacrifice Craig over but Warren’s bobble would allow Bogaerts to reach. With two on and no outs, Adam Warren buckled down and generated two ground outs and a fly out to strand the runners in a great effort.

Red Sox closer Koji Uehara would come in with the one run lead but it would not last. The first batter Uehara faced was Mark Teixeira. The Yankees first baseman would hit a hanging splitter into right field for his 21st home run of the season and more importantly, it tied the game. One out later, Chase Headley would get a hold of a full count pitch and he hit a no doubt home run to walk off for the win.

Five Yankees relievers created 4.2 innings of one-hit baseball and kept the team in for the win. The home run by Mark Teixeira was the 362nd of his career, passing Joe DiMaggio for 80th all-time.
