Yankees game 139: Unearned loss for Pineda

Kansas City Royals 1 — New York Yankees 0

Pitcher’s duel decided by an unearned run.

Michael Pineda and James Shields were matched up in a duel of big men. Pineda and Shields would match zeroes through the first two innings but a rare error would be decisive in tonight’s game. With one out, Alcides Escobar would be in a long duel with Pineda and after ten plus pitches, Escobar would hit a ground ball that would get through Chase Headley for an error. Escobar would get to second base on the error. Nine times out of 10, Headley makes the play but this was the unfortunate one. Norichika Aoki would hit a single to center field and Escobar came around to score the unearned run.

Through the first three innings the Yankees would be hitles, being retired in order. With two outs in the fourth inning, Brett Gardner would hit a double into the gap to get the Yankees their first hit. Carlos Beltran would be hit in the foot by a pitch but a pop out by McCann ended the threat.

After a single by Salvador Perez in the fourth inning, Michael Pineda would retire the next 11 batters in an outstanding start. In seven innings, Michael Pineda allowed one unearned run on three hits while walking none and striking out four.

Against James Shields, the Yankees would make weak threats at getting on the scoreboard but repeatedly fell short. In the fifth inning, Chase Headley hit a single but Ichiro Suzuki would be the final out of the inning. In the sixth inning, Brett Gardner would fly out to the top of the wall in right field to end the inning.

In the ninth inning with James Shields just over 90 pitches, Derek Jeter would hit a one-out single that ended the night for Shields. In 8.1 innings, James Shileds allowed no runs on three hits while walking none and striking out six. Wade Davis would take over on the mound and pinch-runner Antoan Richardson took over for Jeter. With Gardner batting, Richardson would steal second base. This would be a moot point as Brett Gardner was beaten by 97 MPH fastballs from Davis for the second out of the inning. Carlos Beltran would strikeout looking at a borderline pitch and the Yankees lost a tough pitcher’s duel in unfortunate fashion.
