Yankees game 140: McCarthy, Prado strong in win

Kansas City Royals 2 — New York Yankees 6

Martin Prado returns to the lineup and is a key contributor in the win.

To start the game, the Yankees had a tough task in front of them with Danny Duffy on the mound but one pitch into the game, the young left-hander would exit with a shoulder injury. After the first two outs by Liam Hendriks, the replacement to Duffy, Martin Prado would hit a double into left center field. Mark Teixeira would follow with a single and Prado scored to put the Yankees ahead.

Brandon McCarthy started for the Yankees and looked to keep his impressive time with the Yankees going.

After pitching two scoreless innings, the Royals would put together a rally in the third inning. After a leadoff single, McCarthy retired the next two batters but a single put runners on first and second. Next, Alex Gordon would hit a dipping single to shallow center field where Jacoby Ellsbury made a sliding attempt but could not come up with the catch. Maintaining his composure; Ellsbury would recover and throw to third to get the trail runner out. The game would be tied but a focused Ellsbury ended the inning before more could happen.

With Francisco Cervelli dealing with migraines, John Ryan Murphy got the start today. The Yankees young catcher would hit a double to left field and scored easily on a triple over the head of center fielder Lorenzo Cain by Jacoby Ellsbury. Derek Jeter would have a smart at-bat in the situation with a sacrifice fly to shallow center field, just deep enough to bring home Ellsbury.

After a single by Chase Headley and two outs, Murphy hit a single that put Headley on third. Royals catcher Salvador Perez attempted to pickoff Headley but his throw would go deep into left field and the error would allow Headley to score and the Yankees were ahead by three.

The Yankees would keep the extra-base hits coming with a pair of doubles from Martin Prado and Carlos Beltran. Chase Headley would walk to put two on with two outs. Ichiro Suzuki entered the gameΒ  for Zelous Wheeler, who started in left field, and got a single to center that put the Yankees ahead by five.

After the three-hit third inning, Brandon McCarthy would allow two hits over the next three innings. A leadoff double in the seventh inning would come around to score two batters later and it was the cue that Brandon McCarthy’s day was over. In 6.2 innings, Brandon McCarthy allowed two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four. Shawn Kelley would finish off the inning for McCarthy.

Dellin Betances and David Robertson would be the shut down pitchers for the eighth and ninth inning, each allowing no baserunners and getting a strikeout to complete the solid win for the Yankees.

As a team, the Yankees hit 5- for-10 with runners in scoring position. The Yankees had five extra base hits in today’s game and got contributions up and down the lineup.
