New York Yankees 13 — Baltimore Orioles 3
Yankees offense erupted in today’s 13-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
Freddy Garcia started today’s game and did not hold his own. Garcia gave the Yankees just 3.1 innings of work. He created his own problems in the 3rd inning when he started it with a walk and a hit batter. Former Yankee Wilson Betemit would do the damage with a 2-run double. Catcher Matt Wieters, who has had noteworthy success against the Yankees this season, also got to Garcia for a run on a single in this inning. This was enough from Garcia who was removed from the game after 52 pitches and just these 3 runs. Joba Chamberlain would come in and have an outstanding appearance. Chamberlain allowed no hits and no runs on 1.2 innings with 4 strikeouts and just 1 walk. The rest of the bullpen followed suit with Chamberlain. Boone Logan threw a scoreless inning with 2 strikeouts, Cory Wade threw 2 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts, and Derek Lowe would finish the game with a scoreless 9th. The bullpen looked much better and more dependable than it had been of late.
Orioles starter Zach Britton can be credited with his own loss in today’s game. In the 4th inning, Alex Rodriguez led off with a rocket off the right field wall that kept him to a single. This may have been the hit the hardest and farthest in the inning. Two walks would load the bases with no outs. First baseman Steve Pearce walked to bring in a run. After Andruw Jones struck out, continuing his struggles, Jayson Nix hit a soft fly ball single to right field and Ichiro Suzuki hit a chopper right in front of the plate that he beat out with his speed to bring in 2 more runs. Another walk to Derek Jeter would bring in a run before Britton’s day was done. Curtis Granderson took over for Andruw Jones in the 6th inning and created instant offense with his 35th home run of his season. Granderson’s recent struggles could be behind him as he would come through with 2 runs in the 7th inning. The offense would go off again in the 8th inning. Derek Jeter brought in 2 with a 2-run home run. A walk and a fielding error by Mark Reynolds would give the Yankees more opportunities to score with a Russell Martin single and Curtis Granderson would come through again with a 2-run double to cap off his 5 RBI game. The Yankees offense worked on many aspects as they drove runs in with base hits, patience, and power.
