Yankees Game 140: Yankees endure the elements in sixth consecutive win

Tampa Bay Rays 5 – New York Yankees 7

After a thrilling walk-off win last night, the Yankees looked to continue their five-game winning streak.

Michael Pineda worked around a lead off single by Logan Forsythe for a scoreless first inning and the Yankees came to bat against lefty Blake Snell. Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a single and came around to score on a double by Rob Refsnyder. In the third inning, Gary Sanchez found his home run stroke when he took Snell deep to center field for his 12th home run of the season.

Mark Teixeira got on base with a one-out double, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch by Snell.

Blake Snell could not get through three innings and the Yankees took advantage of the bullpen in the fourth inning.

After the Rays made this a game, receiving back-to-back solo home runs from Logan Morrison and Steven Souza, the Yankees pulled away again. With two outs in the fourth inning, Rob Refsnyder hit a single. Kevin Jepsen came on in relief but Gary Sanchez welcomed him with a single. Starlin Castro walked to load the bases and Mark Teixeira made the Rays pay. On a 1-1 count, Mark Teixeira took Kevin Jepsen deep to the Yankees bullpen for a grand slam that extended the Yankees lead to five.

In the fifth inning, Michael Pineda got into trouble after a one-out walk of Forsythe. Kevin Kiermaier got on base with a single and Evan Longoria reached on a potential double play that a replay review made it a force out. With two outs and the Rays rallying against Pineda, the manager decided the win was more important and made the call to the bullpen. Chasen Shreve got the call and proceeded to strikeout Brad Miller to end the inning.

In 4 2/3 innings, Michael Pineda allowed two runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out seven.

Chasen Shreve stayed on for the sixth inning but Logan Morrison started the inning with a double. Steven Souza brought home Morrison with a single to bring the Rays within four. Bobby Wilson brought home Souza with a run-scoring single against Adam Warren but Logan Forsythe struck out to keep the Yankees lead at three. Adam Warren and Tommy Layne combined for the seventh inning. Tyler Clippard pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

In the ninth inning, Dellin Betances got the first out of the inning before Kevin Kiermaier and Evan Longoria hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Following a 51-minute rain delay, Dellin Betances returned to the mound and proceeded to strikeout Brad Miller. Logan Morrison made it a two-run game with a single but the strikeout of Steven Souza ended tonight’s game.

The Yankees have won six in a row. The Yankees are one game out of the second Wild Card spot.
