Yankees game 141: Another unearned loss

Kansas City Royals 2 – New York Yankees 0

Shane Greene got the start today and defense would be the issue for the rookie starter.

After a nearly 30-pitch first inning, the Royals would benefit from a very poor throw by Greene. After a dribbling single by Josh Willingham and a bloop single by Mike Moustakas opened the inning, Greene would get the next two batters out before Norichika Aoki would hit a soft ground ball down the first base line. Shane Greene would field the ball but a poor grip would result in a poor throw that would go wide of Mark Teixeira at first base and Willingham would advance and score.

In the third inning, a dropped fly ball off the bat of Alex Gordon by Carlos Beltran would come back to haunt the Yankees. After a steal with one out, Eric Hosmer would hit a single to right field. Carlos Beltran would field the ball in front of him and make a strong throw home. It would reach the first base side of the plate but Brian McCann would make no play on Gordon scoring. McCann would get Hosmer out between first and second but the run did score. On the play, Gordon stumbled around third base but McCann had his back to the play when he went to the first base side.

The pitch count would catch up to Shane Greene as he exited after just five innings. In five innings, Shane Greene allowed two unearned runs on five hits while walking three and striking out four. He threw 90 pitches in this start.

For the Royals, Yordano Ventura pitched and opportunities presented itself for the Yankees.

In the first inning, Derek Jeter hit a single in his first at-bat and he would reach second on a ground ball that second baseman Omar Infante could not handle but a fly out and a ground out would end the inning without a run crossing the plate. The Yankees would get a hit in the second to start the inning but the next three would be retired. In the third inning, a pair of walks would alternate with outs. In the sixth inning, the Yankees would start the inning with a walk but ended it with a double play. In Ventura’s last inning, he would walk the last batter he faced before the bullpen took over. Reliever Aaron Crow would generate a double play from Chase Headley and the inning would end a batter later.

In six plus innings, Yordano Ventura allowed no runs on three hits despite walking four and striking out two.

The bullpen would have a strong outing again as Adam Warren, Shawn Kelley Josh Outman and Esmil Rogers combined for four scoreless innings in relief of Greene but the offense would not come around.

Carlos Beltran would hit a single in the ninth inning against Wade Davis but the offense would fall flat for another unfortunate starting pitcher.

Like Pineda two nights ago, Shane Greene would be the hard luck loser without allowing an earned run.

Win – Yordano Ventura (12-9)

Loss – Shane Greene (4-3)
