Yankees game 141: Blue Jays too much for Gardner, Yankees

Toronto Blue Jays 10 – New York Yankees 7

The second game of the doubleheader went as poorly as the first game tonight.

After a scoreless inning between Ivan Nova and the Blue Jays’ Marcus Stroman, the second inning did not go smoothly for Nova. After the first out, Ezequiel Carrera hit a double to left field. Ryan Goins plated a run on a single. After a passed ball and a wild pitch, Cliff Pennington hit a line drive to right, a two-run home run to put the Blue Jays ahead by three.

Jose Bautista hit a run-scoring double after Ben Revere got on base with a single. Two hit batters loaded the bases and the final hit surrendered by Nova came on a two-run double by Russell Martin.

In just 1 2/3 innings, Ivan Nova allowed six runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Through the first four innings, the Yankees were held without a hit, though three base runners on a hit by pitch and two walks. John Ryan Murphy ended the no-hit bid with an infield single by second base. After a fielder’s choice for the first out, Brendan Ryan reached with an infield single of his own. After a ground out by Jacoby Ellsbury looked to spoil the chance at scoring, Brett Gardner hit a three-run home run to right center field to cut the deficit in half.

While the Yankees offense rallied into the game, relievers Nick Rumbelow (1 1/3 innings) and Chris Capuano were holding the Blue Jays off the scoreboard.

Chris Capuano finished off his third inning of relief in the sixth inning and maybe the Gardner home run opened a cloud because when it rained, it poured.

After a 33 minute rain delay, Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman was replaced. In five innings, Stroman allowed three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two.

Reliever Bo Schultz struck out Chase Headley for the first out but Dustin Ackley and Murphy hit a pair of singles before Aaron Loup came in for Didi Gregorius. The Yankees shortstop put a run on the board with a double that was all the Yankees could get.

The Yankees brought the deficit down to two but asking Chris Capuano for a fourth inning of relief was too much.

Justin Smoak started the seventh inning with a single. Capuano recorded two outs but loaded the bases with another single and a walk. With the bases loaded, Ben Revere hit a single to the right side, scoring two runs. Branden Pinder came in for relief and proceeded to give up a pair of run-scoring singles to Josh Donaldson and Jose Bautista, to put the Yankees deficit at six.

In the eighth inning, Brett Gardner came up to the plate with Didi Gregorius and Stephen Drew on base after a pair of singles. On a full count pitch from Jeff Francis, the Yankees left fielder put a three-run home run into the right field seats, his second three-run home run of the game.

Brett Gardner finished the game with six runs batted in. Add in the first game and Gardner had seven runs batted in on three home runs.

Ultimately, despite the six runs batted in by Gardner, the Yankees fell short. The Yankees lost both games of an important doubleheader with the American League East-leading Toronto Blue Jays. They will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow.
