Yankees Game 141: Ellsbury walks off

New York Yankees 3 — Boston Red Sox 4

Inabilities to hold leads and missing the “big hits” hurt when Jacoby Ellsbury walks off for a 4-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

Hiroki Kuroda generally has pitched with minimal run support and tonight was about the same again. Tonight, Kuroda gave the Yankees 6.1 innings but what he didn’t do was hold the lead he received. He received an early lead but gave that lead up in a 2-run 3rd inning. Then, he would get another lead back but he would give that lead up again when Dustin Pedroia hit a home run in the 6th. He would get 1 more out in the 7th before exiting with the game tied. Boone Logan would be unable to get Ellsbury out but Joba Chamberlain finished off the inning without giving up the lead. With the game tied, David Robertson took over and proceeded to strikeout the side in the 8th inning. However, his second inning of work in the 9th would not go as smooth as he would get the 1st out before 3 consecutive singles would bring in the game-winning run on a walk-off single by Jacoby Ellsbury.

The Yankees’ struggles with runners in scoring position was evident. In the 1st inning, the Yankees would get the bases loaded but this would only bring in 1 run in what should have been a more productive inning. In the 3rd inning, 2 walks were followed with 3 straight outs as the Yankees could not make the most of the mistakes made by Jon Lester. The 6th inning had a successful rally as a walk and single were advanced with a sacrifice bunt. With 2 runners in scoring position, Derek Jeter came though with a ground-rule double to right field that brought in the tying and go-ahead run. This would be all the offense that the Yankees could generate in a night when they hit 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position. The Yankees managed to get 7 walks from Jon Lester but left 9 runners on base. Nick Swisher managed to break his 0 for 28 slump with a double in the 1st inning and he would finish the night with 2 hits but Curtis Granderson would leave 5 on base as he came to bat with huge opportunities but made nothing of them.

Win – Andrew Bailey (1-0)

Loss – David Robertson (1-7)
