Yankees Game 143: Hughes holds down the Sox

New York Yankees 2 — Boston Red Sox 0

Phil Hughes put together an outstanding start in tonight’s 2-0 win over the Boston Red Sox.

One of the biggest flaws in Phil Hughes season was being inefficient. He would need too many pitches to finish off at-bats. That wasn’t a problem in tonight’s game as he peppered the strike zone when he walked just 1 while striking out 7 through 7.1 innings. His other flaw of the season was the home run but with 7.1 scoreless innings he put together an outstanding start to help the Yankees. He held leads and didn’t give up the slim lead he received. Boone Logan and David Robertson helped finish the 8th inning with one out each. Rafael Soriano gave up 1 hit and faced the potential tying run but he shut the door to create a 2-game win streak and notch his 38th save of the season.

The Yankees benefited from patience against Felix Doubront. In the 4th inning, a leadoff single and stolen base by Alex Rodriguez appeared to rattle the young left-hander. He kept a close eye on Rodriguez and consequently lost the strike zone as he would walk the next 2 batters and load the bases. On a 1-0 count, Andruw Jones would bring in one run with a sacrifice fly but that would be all the damage done when Curtis Granderson lined into an unassisted double play. The walk played a factor in the second run of the game scoring in the 7th inning. Steve Pearce would walk and would eventually score after a pair of singles brought in the run. The second single came off the bat of Derek Jeter, who tied Willie Mays on the all-time hits list with a bloop single off of Junichi Tazawa. The Yankees went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position and left a total of 11 on base but they were helped out by an amazing pitching performance that needed just enough run support.

Win – Phil Hughes (15-12)

Loss – Felix Doubront (10-9)
