Yankees game 145: Heartbreak in extra inning comeback

New York Yankees 1 — Baltimore Orioles 2 (11 innings)

The first of two games today featured a pitcher’s duel with an eventful 11th inning.

Brandon McCarthy pitched for the Yankees and Kevin Gausman went for the Orioles. The two right-handers would go zero-for-zero in today’s game. Through the first two innings for McCarthy, he would allow a hit in each of the innings but he did not allow a run across the plate. In fact, after a second inning single by J.J. Hardy, McCarthy would retire the next 13 batters he faced.

For the Yankees offense, Kevin Gausman allowed two hits through the first four innings but the Yankees had a slim opportunity in the fifth inning. With a single and two outs, Chris Young hit a double to put runners on second and third. Stephen Drew would reach base on a walk but John Ryan Murphy would fly out to the deep left field corner to end the inning.

After finishing the seventh inning, Brandon McCarthy would allow a ground-rule double to Kelly Johnson and that would be the end of his day in the eighth inning. Nick Hundley would hit a sacrifice against Dellin Betances that allowed him to reach after an inability to get the lead runner, Kelly Johnson, at third base. Betances would bounce back with a strikeout of Jonathan Schoop for the first out. With the infield in, Nick Markakis hit a ground ball to second baseman Stephen Drew, who would catch Johnson too far off of third base and the heads up play eliminated the lead runner. A walk of Alejandro De Aza put Betances in hot water but a strikeout of Adam Jones would end the inning and keep the Orioles off the scoreboard.

In seven plus innings, Brandon McCarthy allowed no runs on four hits while walking none and striking out six. A very good outing by McCarthy.

After seven scoreless innings from Kevin Gausman, Andrew Miller struck out the side and Darren O’Day struck out two in his scoreless inning. Betances would get through the eighth inning and got one out in the ninth before a walk and David Roberston took over for the Yankees. After a stolen base, Robertson walked Hardy to setup a force at every base with one out. Kelly Johnson would pop out but Nick Hundley would walk to load the bases. With two outs, David Robertson would get Jonathan Schoop looking at called strike three and the Yankees dodged another bases loaded situation.

David Robertson would pitch a scoreless 10th inning but his pitch count would reach 35. The heroics of late would shine bright one more time in the 11th inning.

With two outs against reliever Brad Brach, Chris Young would hit his 11th home run of the season and his third as a Yankee. The Yankees drew first blood and the Yankees used both Betances and Robertson to maintain the scoreless tie. With the best arms used, Adam Warren would get the call for a potential save. Warren would have a difficult time finding the strike zone as he walked Nelson Cruz to start the inning. The runner would advance on a sacrifice before Warren hit J.J. Hardy. He would strike out Kelly Johnson but a walk to pinch-hitter Steve Clevenger would load the bases. Pinch-hitting for Schoop was Jimmy Paredes and the pinch-hitter would take no pitches to get the game-winning hit as he drilled a double into the right field corner for a two-run, walk-off double.

The Orioles loaded the bases without the product of a hit and the one hit they got was the game-winner. The Yankees teased with the brink of failure and they finally fell over the edge in the 11th inning.

Win – Brad Brach (7-1)

Loss – Adam Warren (3-6)
