New York Yankees 7 — Baltimore Orioles 5

Alfonso Soriano swings the hot bat in tonight’s 7-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

With one out in the third, Chris Stewart would get on with a single. Alex Rodriguez would continue produce out of the two spot in the lineup. Rodriguez would hit a double to center field and Stewart would come in for the first run of the game. In the fifth inning, the Orioles would rally back.

J.J. Hardy and Brian Roberts would open up the fifth inning with singles. Rookie Henry Urrutia would hit an infield single that got by Alex Rodriguez but Eduardo Nunez would field it. A wide throw would get by Mark Reynolds and a run would score while Urrutia got to second. Nick Markakis would productively sacrifice fly to left field and the Orioles took a 2-1 lead. Manny Machado would ground out but Chris Davis would do what he’s done better than anyone this season, hit home runs. Chris Davis would hit his 49th home run of the season and the lead became 4-1.

In the sixth inning, the Yankees would blast back.

With one out, Alfonso Soriano would hit a solo home run. With two outs, Mark Reynolds would get back at his former team with a booming solo home run to deep left center field. The pair of home runs made it a 4-2 game.

In the seventh inning, Ivan Nova was replaced with Adam Warren. In six innings, Ivan Nova gave up four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two.

After a solid seventh inning by Kevin Gausman, the eighth inning wouldn’t go as well for the rookie flamethrower. Alex Rodriguez would get the inning going with a double. Robinson Cano would hit a single to center field that brought home the hustling Rodriguez for the first run of the inning, tying the game. Alfonso Soriano would swing for the big fly and he would succeed. The two-run home run is the second of the night for Soriano and the Yankees would get a 6-4 lead.

Francisco Rodriguez would replace Gausman and wouldn’t do much better. Curtis Granderson would go the other way for a double and Reynolds would back it up with a double of his own. The four-run seventh inning put the Yankees ahead by a score of 7-4.

Shawn Kelley would get the eighth inning and after starting with a walk of Chris Davis, Kelley would strike out Adam Jones. During the Jones at-bat, Austin Romine would be on the bad end of a foul ball, ringing off his catcher’s mask. Romine would finish the at-bat but J.R. Murphy would come in to replace the shaken young catcher. Two wild pitches getting by Murphy would put Davis on third. Matt Wieters would productively sacrifice fly to bring home Davis and it was a 7-5 game.

Enter Sandman.

Mariano Rivera would come on for a four-out save. The first batter would pop out to the catcher and the lead was intact. The Yankees would be unable to bring home any insurance in the ninth inning but Rivera would not need it. Rivera would get three ground outs, the last to Rivera and the last player to wear #42 got save number 42 in tonight’s win.

The far too familiar theme of the 2013 season is injuries. Alex Rodriguez exited in the eighth inning with a tight left hamstring. Austin Romine exited in the eighth inning with what may likely be a concussion. Ivan Nova was removed from the game as a precaution after he spoke of tightness in his tricep.

Win – Adam Warren (2-2)

Loss – Kevin Gausman (2-5)

Save – Mariano Rivera (42)
