New York Yankees 5 — Baltimore Orioles 4

Robinson Cano came up clutch in tonight’s 5-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

In the first inning, the Yankees made starter Scott Feldman pay. Feldman would start the game with a walk of Brett Gardner. The speedy centerfielder would take second for his 24th stolen base of the season. Alex Rodriguez would ground out, advancing Gardner to third base and Robinson Cano would bring in the first run with a ground out too. The Yankees were ahead by a score of 1-0.

Andy Pettitte would make that hold until just the third inning. Pettitte would get two outs but the third out proved to be a problem. Brian Roberts would get a two-out single in the third inning. Manny Machado would follow with a single of his own too. Chris Davis would drill a double to right field and both Roberts and Machado would score, putting the Orioles ahead 2-1.

In the fourth inning, a pair of doubles, the second by J.J. Hardy would give the Orioles a 3-1 lead. But the Yankees would respond with the long ball. In the fifth inning, Curtis Granderson opened up the inning by depositing a home run onto Eutaw Street to pull the Yankees within one. Alex Rodriguez would tie the game in the sixth inning. An opposite field solo home run by Rodriguez tied the game and Andy Pettitte held the Orioles down through his start.

Pettitte would get one out in the seventh before walking Nate McLouth. The walk would cue the end of Pettitte’s time. Shawn Kelley would come on to help out the veteran lefty. The first out would come on a strong throw by Chris Stewart. The Yankees catcher would catch McLouth stealing second with a great throw to newly-acquired shortstop Brendan Ryan. The third out would come on a strikeout, as many expect of Kelley.

In 6.1 innings, Andy Pettitte gave up three runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking one.

David Robertson would make his return from shoulder tendinitis with an appearance in the eighth inning. He would give up a pair of singles but he got one strikeout and kept the game tied. The Yankees would break the tie in the ninth inning.

After getting the last out in the eighth inning, Tommy Hunter would stay in for the ninth. Robinson Cano appreciated that. On the second pitch of the ninth inning, Robinson Cano would break the tie with a solo home run. The 27th home run of the season also gave Cano 100 RBI. Later with one out, Curtis Granderson would hit a triple to deep center field. Mark Reynolds would strike out but Lyle Overbay would come through in a late-game situation again. Against lefty Troy Patton, Lyle Overbay would get an infield single that brings home Granderson as a huge insurance run.

Mariano Rivera would come on for the ninth inning. After getting the first two outs, Nate McLouth would hit a deep double over the head of Brett Gardner. Brian Roberts would bring home McLouth with a single to right field. In a matchup of experience vs. youth, Mariano Rivera faced Manny Machado with the tying run on base. On three pitches, with the last being a high cutter, Manny Machado would strike out and the timeless Mariano Rivera finished the game for his 43rd save of the season.
