Yankees game 146 preview (9/18/15)

YanksMets

Masahiro Tanaka (12-6, 3.40 ERA) kicks off the high stakes Subway Series against Steven Matz (3-0, 1.88 ERA.) Tanaka is coming off four days rest and a seven scoreless inning victory over the Blue Jays. He faced the Mets last May, pitching a complete game four hit shutout.

New York native Matz is making his third start since coming back from a torn lat. He gave up one run on six hits through five innings against the Braves his last time out. This is his first time facing the Yanks.

There hasn’t been a Subway Series played this late in the season, and hasn’t been a more high stakes one since 2000. The Yankees are chasing the Blue Jays, who lead the AL East by three games, while the Mets are trying to put the NL East out of reach of the Nationals.

You walk around the city and you either see the pinstripes or the Mets hats, and that gets you fired up before you even get to the stadium. The crowd gets into it. New York gets into it. It’s good for the city. -David Wright
