Yankees game 146: Silent bats swept in doubleheader

New York Yankees 0 — Baltimore Orioles 5

Offense puts up little fight in the finale of the doubleheader in Baltimore.

The Yankees looked to split the doubleheader and they turned to a rookie, Bryan Mitchell, to pitch their way to a win. In his first major league start, Mitchell hit some early bumps in the road but stayed on a good path. The Yankees rookie did not have a clean inning in his first start. After five Orioles batters reached base through the first three innings but were stranded, the Orioles drew first blood in the fourth inning.

Center fielder David Lough would lead off the fourth inning with a walk and with one out, Ryan Flaherty would hit a double that put the Orioles on the board. Then with two outs, Alejandro De Aza would hit a triple that put the Orioles ahead by two. The Orioles helped Mitchell out of the fifth inning when it ended on a strikeout with a caught stealing baserunner.

In five innings, Bryan Mitchell allowed two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two. He threw 84 pitches for a good first major league start.

For the Yankees offense, Bud Norris was in control through much of the game.

In the first inning, Brett Gardner made his return to the starting lineup after missing a number of games with an abdominal injury. He would proceed to single in his first at-bat but would be stranded. Jacoby Ellsbury would get a two-out single in the third inning but he was stranded on a Derek Jeter ground out back to the pitcher. Brett Gardner would walk in the fourth inning and he stole his 20th base of the season but a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to first stranded him as well.

Chris Young got a one-out single in the seventh inning but a pair of strikeouts followed. The fourth and last Yankees hit came in the eighth inning. Antoan Richardson would drop a perfect bunt single against reliever Tommy Hunter who would make a reckless throw that let Richardson advance to second. Three straight outs followed and that is the Yankees offense.

In seven innings, Bud Norris allowed no runs on three hits while walking two and striking out 10.

David Phelps made his return from the disabled list in the seventh inning. After a strong start that featured one strikeout, he would lose the strike zone. Phelps would walk the next three batters he faced to load the bases. Delmon Young would hit a single to right field and two runs scored. He would be relieved and Rich Hill finished the inning.

In 2/3 of an inning, David Phelps threw 29 pitches and allowed two runs on one hit while walking three and striking out one.

Over the two games today, the Yankees scored one run in 20 innings. The one run came on one swing, the Chris Young home run in game one.
