Yankees game 147: Opportunity strikes for Young again

New York Yankees 3 — Baltimore Orioles 2

Chris Young scores the difference maker in today’s game.

The Yankees scored first on a home run by Brian McCann that just got over the large scoreboard in right field. Still with one out against Miguel Gonzalez, Mark Teixeira would walk and Chris Young would hit a line drive double into left field that put runners on second and third. Antoan Richardson would come through with a single to right field that scored Teixeira and put runners on the corners. After getting two outs with a strikeout of Zelous Wheeler, Jacoby Ellsbury would come up to the plate. Ellsbury would not factor into the Yankees third run of the game. With Richardson on first and Young on third; Richardson would make a break for second base. Catcher Caleb Joseph would attempt to throw out Richardson and in the process, Chris Young made a break for home without a return throw. The successful steals of second and home plate scored the Yankees third run.

Three runs is good but the three hits in the second were all the his the Yankees would get until the eighth inning.

Shane Greene benefited from the run support and he would make it last, albeit, with a lot of pitches. He would give up at least one extra base hit in each of the first three innings of the game but he would only allow a run to score and he struck out four. He would strike out a pair in the fourth and a pair in the fifth as his strikeout total, and consequently his pitch count, rose. With a two-run lead and one out in the sixth inning, Shane Greene would give up a solo home run on a hanging slider to Steve Pearce and that would be his day.

In 5.1 innings, Shane Greene allowed two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out nine. He threw a career-high 112 pitches.

The bullpen would backup Greene and it started with Esmil Rogers finishing the sixth inning. Josh Outman would help Esmil Rogers finish the seventh inning. In the eighth inning, Martin Prado would snap the hitless streak with a single but he would not come around to score. Shawn Kelley pitched in the eighth inning and gave up one hit to Adam Jones but he kept him from scoring as the one-run lead remained intact.

After throwing 35 pitches in the heartbreaking game one loss yesterday, David Robertson took the mound today looking for the save. Jimmy Paredes, the batter with the game-winning hit in the first game yesterday would start the ninth inning with a single to center field. He would advance on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a ground out. Nick Markakis, with the potential tying run on third base, would harmlessly ground out to second base and the Yankees won.
