New York Yankees 1 — Boston Red Sox 5
Offense held down by Jon Lester in today’s 5-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
CC Sabathia got today’s start and had a perfect first inning but it went downhill from there. Mike Napoli would hit an infield single that Mark Reynolds would field at third base. The throw from Reynolds would go wide of first and find itself in the camera well, letting Napoli go to second on the error. Jonny Gomes would walk and Daniel Nava would advance them on a sacrifice bunt. Will Middlebrooks would hit a sharp grounder to Brendan Ryan but it would be enough to bring home Napoli for the first run of the game.
Dustin Pedroia opened the third inning with a single. The Red Sox would play strategic baseball again with Shane Victorino advancing Pedroia to second with a sacrifice bunt. David Ortiz would easily score Pedroia by going the opposite way for a double. Jonny Gomes would bring in an additional run and the Red Sox had a three-run lead after three innings.
In the fourth inning, the Yankees got their first hit and it was a great one. A triple by Curtis Granderson opened the inning and gave them a great opportunity to start chipping away. Mark Reynolds would become a victim of the left-heavy shift when he lined out to Pedroia. Robinson Cano would bring in Granderson on a ground out but that was all the Yankees could find in the inning. They still trailed by two.
Sabathia would face the bottom of the order and gave up a leadoff single to David Ross. Xander Bogaerts would get walked and the lineup turned over. Dustin Pedroia would hit into a double play but Shane Victorino succeeded in hitting a single to left field to get the run they just surrendered back. The Red Sox would score one more in the fifth inning when Sabathia started the inning with a walk. Jonny Gomes hit a double to put runners in scoring position. Daniel Nava would hit a sacrifice fly to put them ahead 5-1.
Through the Yankees lineup, Jon Lester silenced most of them. Curtis Granderson hit a double and a triple but only scored once. Brendan Ryan also continued his successful hitting with a single today. The rest of the lineup went 0 for 23 in the game.
