Yankees game 149: Rays walk off in pitcher’s duel

New York Yankees 0 — Tampa Bay Rays 1

The Yankees and the Rays would match zeroes until the ninth inning in series opener.

Chris Capuano went against the Rays’ Alex Colome in tonight’s game. Chris Capuano would manage to dodge danger each inning. In the first inning, two would reach on a single and a walk but a fly out ended the inning. In the third inning, Capuano walked two with two outs but a pop out would keep the Rays off the board. James Loney would hit a two-out double in the fifth inning but Capuano would get a fly out to end that inning.

In six innings, Chris Capuano allowed no runs on two hits while walking four and striking out six. The start was not great but he did a good job of keeping the Rays off the scoreboard.

Against Alex Colome, the Yankees had a few opportunities but they would go to waste as well. In the second inning, Mark Teixeira would hit a single off the glove of Colome and Carlos Beltran would follow with a single to left center field. Chase Headley, Ichiro Suzuki and John Ryan Murphy would all go down in order afterwards to end the threat. In the fourth and fifth inning, the Yankees got a single but that would be all they could get. Martin Prado would hit a single, his second hit of the night, in the sixth inning but Mark Teixeira would hit into a double play.

In the seventh inning, Chase Headley would take a called strike one that he did not agree with. He appeared to have words with home plate umpire Marty Foster. As Headley returned to the plate to bat, Foster would throw Headley out for his comments regarding the strike zone.

Ichiro Suzuki hit a double, the only extra base hit for the Yankees, and Murphy walked afterwards but pinch-hitter Brian McCann would fly out and ended the inning. In 6.2 innings, Alex Colome allowed no runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four.

Adam Warren would pitch two perfect innings after Capuano so the game would be tied after eight innings. Shawn Kelley would follow for the ninth inning. After getting the first out in the ninth, Logan Forsythe would hit a line drive single to left field. James Loney would hit a bloop single to center field to put two on with one out. Pinch-hitter David DeJesus would strike out but pinch-hitter Matt Joyce would walk to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Ben Zobrist would hit a line drive to right field and the Rays walked off this pitcher’s duel.

Over the course of tonight’s game, the Yankees only got more than one hit in an inning once.
