New York Yankees 9 — Toronto Blue Jays 4

The Yankees offense stayed on point to back Andy Pettitte to his third win of the season in tonight’s 9-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Andy Pettitte missed his last start with back spasms so this was his first start in 10 days. The injury that forced him to miss a start was nowhere to be seen tonight. The 40-year-old veteran gave up a leadoff triple that would score but he would be rock solid. In the second and third inning, Pettitte would have four consecutive strikeouts as he dominated. Consistent home run threat Jose Bautista does what he does best, hitting a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Pettitte would get one more out in the eighth inning before his night would end.

In 7.1 innings, Andy Pettitte gave up three runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. The efficient left-hander needed 90 pitches to get through his return to the rotation.

The Yankees got to Toronto starting pitcher Brandon Morrow early. Robinson Cano would hit a double and Kevin Youkilis would be hit by a pitch. Travis Hafner would bring in Cano with a double and Vernon Wells would bring in a run with a productive out to put the Yankees ahead by two.

Travis Hafner would continue swinging a hot bat when he hit his fifth home run of the season in the third inning. This is his second home run in the last three games.

In the sixth and seven innings, some former Blue Jays reminded the Toronto crowd what they are missing. Lyle Overbay once spent five years with the Toronto Blue Jays and he showed his power with a solo home run to center field. This was Overbay’s second home run of the season. Then, in the seventh inning, Vernon Wells made his splash on his return. On a 1-2 pitch, Wells would hit a solo home run into left field, his fourth home run of the season. Once a Blue Jay for 12 years, today was his first return since becoming a Yankee.

The Yankees combined for 13 hits today, 10 being for extra bases. Ichiro Suzuki and Francisco Cervelli provided two doubles and Brett Gardner hit a triple.

Win – Andy Pettitte (3-0)

Loss – Brandon Morrow (0-2)
