Yankees Game 150: Martin walks off in 10

Oakland Athletics 1 — New York Yankees 2 (10 innings)

Russell Martin walks off in the 10th inning of tonight’s win over the Oakland Athletics.

The Yankees turned to CC Sabathia to continue the winning ways and he gave them the effort fitting of an ace. Sabathia didn’t give up his first hit in the 6th inning. Through 8 innings, Sabathia would give up just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 11 to give the Yankees a tremendous start against one of the league’s hottest teams. Closer Rafael Soriano would come in for the save in a 1-run game but did not have the same effectiveness as Sabathia. The first batter Soriano faced, outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, nearly hit a home run to deep left center but it was caught. The next batter was pinch-hitter Brandon Moss, who tied the game with a solo home run to right field to erase Sabathia’s W in an outstanding start. Soriano was helped out by a nice catch by Russell Martin on a pop up and after 2 walks, would get the final out on a strikeout but the damage was done and the lead was gone. David Robertson would pitch a clean 10th inning and earn the win on the walk-off.

Oakland starter Jarrod Parker was also on the top of his game tonight to match Sabathia inning for inning. Ichiro Suzuki continues to show that he can get hits in every sort of way. In the 3rd inning, Ichiro Suzuki actually got a hit that went inside the uniform of pitcher Jarrod Parker, the first hit of the game. He would also steal 2nd but would not be able to score in the inning. Two singles and a sacrifice fly brought in the only run of the game off of Parker in 8 innings of work. The Yankees would get just 6 hits and strikeout 7 times in a quality outing by Parker. In the 10th inning, Russell Martin would come through with his 2nd walk-off home run of the season, his 18th of the season and the win to extend their winning streak to 6.
