Yankees Game 150: Sox sweep with strong offense

New York Yankees 2 — Boston Red Sox 9

The pitching couldn’t slow down the potent offense in tonight’s 9-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

The walk was the flaw of Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz‘s game tonight. He started the game with a walk to leadoff hitter Curtis Granderson. Buchholz would try to pick off Granderson but a wide throw would go down the right field line and Granderson would end up on third base. The throwing error by Buchholz would be enough for the first run when Alex Rodriguez grounded out. The Yankees had the early lead.

Ivan Nova was the starter for the Yankees as they looked to avoid the sweep. After getting the first out, Daniel Nava would hit a double. David Ortiz would erase the one-run lead the Yankees had with a single bringing home Nava. Ivan Nova would throw a pitch that got by Stewart during the Mike Napoli at-bat but the vacant first base would not lead to a walk of the power-hitting Napoli. Instead, Napoli would put the Red Sox ahead with a deep two-run home run to center field.

In the third inning, two Yankees would reach, Stewart when he got hit by a pitch and Rodriguez on a single. Unfortunately for the Yankees, it took the fist pitch of Robinson Cano‘s at-bat to erase that on a 4-6-3 double play. In the fourth inning, Alfonso Soriano started the inning with a walk but on the first pitch of Lyle Overbay‘s at-bat, 6-3 double play and the Yankees rally was deflated again.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Mike Napoli would walk this time and a force out put Jarrod Saltalamacchia on first. Another wild pitch put Saltalamacchia to second base. Stephen Drew would move him over on a ground out and rookie Xander Bogaerts would walk to put runners on the corners. The Red Sox would execute a double steal. Brendan Ryan caught on despite the throw from Stewart but it was too late for Ryan to make a play on it and the Red Sox stole a run.

Ivan Nova’s last batter came in the fifth inning. He led off with a walk of Dustin Pedroia. Daniel Nava would hit a ground-rule double that prevented Pedroia from scoring on the play. Nova would intentionally walk Ortiz to get a force at every base. Unfortunately, Nova would hit Mike Carp with the bases loaded and a run would score. Nova’s night was over. Adam Warren stepped in and stepped up. He struck out Mike Napoli and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Stephen Drew would fly out and Warren finished off Nova’s line.

In four innings, Ivan Nova gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Adam Warren, Cesar Cabral and Joba Chamberlain would piece together the next inning but gave up two runs in the process. Mike Zagurski made his Yankees debut in the seventh inning but would exit to the returning David Phelps. He would give up two runs in his appearance. Dellin Betances would come in for the eighth inning and put up a scoreless inning, striking out two.

In the fifth inning, Alex Rodriguez exited the game with a tight right calf.
