Yankees game 152: Walk off overcomes late game mistake

Toronto Blue Jays 2 — New York Yankees 3

The Yankees walk-off on a ninth inning error.

Shane Greene got the start for the Yankees and while it took him a lot of pitches to get through the first three innings, he settled down. After a single in the third inning, Greene would retire the next 11 faced. He would hold the Blue Jays off the scoreboard through his start and the offense would find a way to get to Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey.

In the first inning, Derek Jeter started the homestand with a single but he would be caught stealing on what he thought was a ball four to Brian McCann but it was actually strike three. Three scoreless innings followed but a two-out walk to Chase Headley would come back to haunt Dickey. Stephen Drew would pull an inside pitch and put a line drive into the right field corner and Headley would come around to score on the play to put the Yankees on the scoreboard.

In the sixth inning, a zero on Derek Jeter’s season line would be changed.

With one out on a 3-1 pitch, Derek Jeter would hit a deep home run into left field. The fourth home run of the season for Derek Jeter would be his first home run at Yankee Stadium this season. In the seventh inning, with a two-run lead, A walk to start the inning and a two-out single put runners on first and second and ended Shane Greene’s night. Dellin Betances would get a fly out of Dioner Navarro to end the inning and keep the Blue Jays scoreboard.

In 6.2 innings, Shane Greene allowed no runs on three hits while walking two and striking out six. He needed 105 pitches.

Dellin Betances would only get one out in the inning but he would be replaced in the eighth inning by Shawn Kelley. After getting the first two outs of the inning, Jose Reyes hit a single to left field.Kelley would attempt to get an 0-2 pitch high and out of the strike zone against Jose Bautista but it would not be high enough. The Blue Jays slugging right fielder would put the high fastball into the left field seats and just like that the Blue Jays tied the game and Shane Greene is forced to settle with a no decision.

After a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts from David Robertson, the Yankees went against Aaron Sanchez in the bottom of the inning.

Chris Young started the inning with a single to center field and he would be pinch-run with Antoan Richardson. In for his speed, Richardson would steal second base without a throw while Brett Gardner was batting. Sanchez would fall behind 3-0 before Gardner failed to bunt two times. He would successfully bunt Richardson to third base so Chase Headley would come up with the game-winning run on third. With the infield in, Headley would hit a ground ball to first baseman Adam Lind and it would find its way through the legs of Lind, letting the Yankees walk-off on the error.
