Yankees game 154: Bautista, Jays too much for Yankees

Toronto Blue Jays 6 — New York Yankees 3

The Yankees rallied once but were unable to find one more in loss.

Jose Bautista would start his impressive day with a single in the first inning off of Chris Capuano. Edwin Encarnacion would hit a double to left center field and Bautista would score on the play. The Yankees got a double from brett Gardner, who had been slumping of late, and Brian McCann reached with one out on an error but Mark Teixeira and Chris Young would be unable to bring anyone home.

After Chris Capuano was an unintended participant in a double play on a deflection off of his back, the Yankees rallied in the third inning.

With two outs against Marcus Stroman, Derek Jeter would hit a single. He would advance on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Brian McCann that defied the shift, going into left field. In the fourth inning, Ichiro Suzuki came up to bat with Chase Headley on first and two outs. The Yankees right fielder would hit a soft line drive just between the infield and the outfield and it dropped in with the aid of some sunshine too. Francisco Cervelli would make the most of the two-out opportunity and hit a single to center field, scoring Headley and putting the Yankees ahead.

Unfortunately for the Yankees, Brendan Ryan replaced Mark Teixeira in the fifth inning, who may have aggravated his wrist yet again.

In the sixth inning, the replacement at first base would play a role. After a walk of Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion hit a ground ball to center where Stephen Drew was shifted. His off balance throw to Brendan Ryan at first base would go wide of first and Brendan Ryan did not vacate the base to save the error. As a result, Bautista went to third base and Encarnacion reached first base. A walk to Dioner Navarro loaded the bases with no outs for Danny Valencia. The Blue Jays third baseman would hit a deep fly ball to the warning track in left field and it would bounce into the stands for a ground-rule double that scored two and put the Blue Jays back ahead. John Mayberry would hit a sacrifice fly to left field that gave the Blue Jays an insurance run. Capuano would get one more out before Chase Whitley finished the inning.

In 5.2 innings, Chris Capuano allowed four runs on five hits while walking four and striking out two.

The Yankees would get a pair of two out hits from Stephen Drew and Ichiro Suzuki but were unable to score them. Jose Bautista would start the seventh inning with an opposite field home run and it put the Blue Jays ahead by three.

In the eighth inning, Chris Young hit a one-out double against reliever Aaron Sanchez. Chase Headley walked to put the potential tying run at the plate but lefty reliever Brett Cecil would get Stephen Drew and Ichiro Suzuki out to end the inning. In tonight’s game, Jose Bautista scored four times and the last time came on a single in the ninth inning that gave the Blue Jays a four-run lead.

Against Brandon Morrow in the ninth inning, Brett Gardner got a one-out single. He would advance on defensive indifference and he would come around to score on a double into the left field corner to bring the Yankees within three. Closer Casey Janssen would come in and immediately hit Brian McCann with a pitch to put the tying run at the plate. Brendan Ryan would strike out in a long at-bat and Chris Young could not come through with a hit as he softly lined out to second base, ending the game.

The Yankees managed 11 hits but just three runs. As a team, the Yankees were 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position.
