Yankees Game 153: Bombers blast off in Minnesota

New York Yankees 6 — Minnesota Twins 3

The Yankees showed the long ball in tonight’s 6-3 win over the Minnesota Twins.

The Yankees had Andy Pettitte and he continued to build on his starts since returning from the disabled list. In 6 innings, Pettitte gave the Yankees a scoreless start despite giving up 7 hits on 88 pitches. The September call-ups surrendered the 3 runs as Cory Wade gave up Pedro Florimon’s 1st career home run and Justin Thomas gave up a 2-run triple to Chris Parmelee. Joba Chamberlain gave another scoreless inning of relief as he continues to return to form.

Target Field didn’t look pitcher-friendly to Minnesota starter Liam Hendriks, who was the victim of 4 home runs. Hendriks would give up all the runs the Yankees would need as he was the victim of 6 runs. After the first run came in on a groundout by Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher came through with a bang with a 2-run home run to give the Yankees an early 3-0 lead. Curtis Granderson hit his 40th home run of the season in the 4th inning with no one on. Raul Ibanez and Eric Chavez each hit home runs in the 7th inning with Chavez’s home run ending Hendriks night with 1 out in the 7th. The Yankees haven’t shown a dependency on the home run recently but tonight was an instance where they showed they possessed the capability to do it still.

Win – Andy Pettitte (5-3)

Loss – Liam Hendriks (1-8)
