Yankees game 153: Double the trouble for the Yankees

Chicago White Sox 5 รขย€ย“ New York Yankees 2

The White Sox looked to be gifting the Yankees tonight’s win but the Yankees kept giving back double.

After a scoreless inning from CC Sabathia and Carlos Rodon, Melky Cabrera opened the second inning with a single. After a strikeout, Alexei Ramirez hit a line drive to right field that bounced its way beyond Carlos Beltran, who recovered it at the wall for a run-scoring double. Sabathia walked one and hit a batter to load the bases but got a ground out to keep the damage to just one.

The Yankees had to reach in the second inning via a Brian McCann hit by pitch and Gregory Bird walk, but could not bring either of them around to score.

In the third inning, a single by Trayce Thompson was sandwiched between a pair of ground outs but Avisail Garcia hit a single to left field that scored Thompson. Garcia was caught in a run down between first and second and was eventually tagged out at first base when he lost contact with the base to end the inning, but the White Sox went ahead by two.

Through the first three innings, the Yankees had four base runners but no hits. Carlos Rodon hit two with pitches and walked two but they were stranded. But, in the third inning, the Yankees got their first hit in an unusual way.

Brian McCann hit a pop fly into the shift and it looked tailor-made for Gordon Beckham but the ball suddenly dropped out of the sky and fell in for a base hit. Chris Young got on base with an infield single that put two on with no outs. After Greg Bird flew out due to a great catch by Trayce Thompson, Rob Refsnyder worked a walk to load the bases. Didi Gregorius found a hole when he hit a single to right, scoring two and tying the game.

Brett Gardner loaded the bases on a soft single to center field but Chase Headley spoiled the rally by grounding to the shortstop to start a 6-4-3 double play.

Following the third inning, CC Sabathia retired eight in a row after a throwing error by Chase Headley in the fourth inning.

In the sixth inning, Carlos Rodon ran into trouble with one-out when Rob Refsnyder hit a double to right field. Didi Gregorius followed it with a walk but Brett Gardner grounded into the Yankees’ second 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

CC Sabathia was solid through six innings, he generated 13 ground outs and looked to keep the game tied. CC fell behind to Mike Olt and the White Sox third baseman hit a deep home run to left field to break the tie. Sabathia got the next out but Gordon Beckham got a hold of a sinker that missed location and put a solo home run into left field, extending the White Sox lead to two.

CC Sabathia struck out Adam Eaton for his final batter faced in tonight’s game. Andrew Bailey followed it up by getting a fly out to end the inning.

In 6 2/3 innings, CC Sabathia allowed four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out three. He was generating ground balls at an outstanding rate but missed location on two pitches that were hit a long way.

Overall, a good outing from the big lefty.

Matt Albers came in for relief of Rodon in the seventh inning and gave up a single to Chase Headley. As is the theme of tonight, Alex Rodriguez followed by hitting into the Yankees’ third 6-4-3 double play, ruining the start of a good inning. Lefty Zach Duke got Carlos Beltran to ground out and end the seventh inning.

The Yankees got Brian McCann on base in the eighth inning but, on cue, Chris Young grounded into the fourth 6-4-3 double play in a dreadful Yankees night for the offense.

For the ninth inning, Nick Rumbelow got the first two outs before Tyler Flowers and Gordon Beckham reached base with a pair of singles. Chasen Shreve came in to face Adam Eaton and the struggling Yankees reliever lost this battle. Eaton hit a single through the middle of the infield for a run-scoring single that put the Yankees down by three.

Former Yankee David Robertson came on for the save and retired the Yankees in order, including a strikeout of Didi Gregorius.
