Yankees game 156: Missed opportunities prove costly

Boston Red Sox 5 โ€“ New York Yankees 1

The Yankees’ missed opportunities come back to haunt them in tonight’s game with the Boston Red Sox.

In the first inning, Ivan Nova gave up a ground-rule double to Mookie Betts. On a ground ball, Betts advanced to third base so the Yankees brought the infield in to cut off the run from scoring and on a ground ball to Chase Headley, Betts was tagged out on a play at home.

The Red Sox ran themselves out of the inning when Xander Bogaerts, who reached on the fielder’s choice, attempted to steal second and was caught after a review overturned the initial safe call.

Like the top of the first, the Yankees leadoff hitter, Jacoby Ellsbury, hit a ground-rule double to left center against Eduardo Rodriguez. Brett Gardner advanced Ellsbury to third on a sacrifice bunt and Alex Rodriguez hit a fly ball to right that was deep enough to score Ellsbury and put the Yankees ahead by one. Carlos Beltran and Chase Headley reached on a pair of singles but Gregory Bird struck out to end the inning.

In the second inning, John Ryan Murphy got on base with a single. Didi Gregorius tried to advance him to second but bunted and popped out for the first out. Rob Refsnyder reached on a fielder’s choice. Jacoby Ellsbury walked to put two on base and a fielding error by Dustin Pedroia allowed Brett Gardner to reach to load the bases for Alex Rodriguez. Eduardo Rodriguez dialed it up to 96 MPH to get it by Alex, striking him out and stranding the bases loaded.

The Yankees and Red Sox exchanged zero for zero to the fifth inning as the 1-0 Yankees lead stood. Ivan Nova got the first two outs with the help from Chase Headley before Xander Bogaerts hit a double off the glove of Chase Headley to extend the inning. The extended inning gave first baseman Travis Shaw an opportunity that he took full advantage of. Shaw hit a line drive two-run home run into the right field seats to change the Yankees one-run lead into a one-run deficit just like that.

In the seventh inning, Ivan Nova started with a strikeout. Blake Swihart hit a single and Deven Marrero followed with a strikeout. With two outs and the inning nearing its end, Jackie Bradley Jr. came through. After making great defensive gems in the third and sixth inning, Bradley Jr. hit a home run just deep enough to get over the wall in left field for a two-run home run, extending the Red Sox lead to three.

In seven innings, Ivan Nova allowed four runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out seven.

The Red Sox added another run in the ninth inning when Deven Marrero hit his first career home run, a solo shot, off of Caleb Cotham to give the Red Sox a four-run lead.

The Yankees got a double from John Ryan Murphy and a walk from Didi Gregorius in the ninth inning but three outs later, the Yankees lost as the days of the regular season are coming to an end.
