Yankees game 157: O’s scatter enough to beat Yankees

Baltimore Orioles 5 — New York Yankees 4

The Baltimore Orioles kept the hits coming but the Yankees kept it close.

In tonight’s game, the Orioles had at least one hit in every inning. An analysis like this is not promising for the Yankees. After keeping the Orioles off the scoreboard in the first inning, Brandon McCarthy would give up the first run of the game and it came to a familiar face. Former Yankee Kelly Johnson would go deep to open the second inning. Then, with two on and two out, Nick Markakis would hit a single that scored the Orioles’ second run of the game.

McCarthy allowed two hits in the third inning but stranded them. In the fourth inning, Nick Markakis got his third hit of the game, a two-run home run that put the Orioles ahead by four. The Yankees would get one back when Mark Teixeira and Chris Young made Jimenez pay for the one-out walk. After the walk of Chase Headley, Mark Teixeira would follow with a double to put runners on second and third. Chris Young would ground out to bring home Chase Headley and the Yankees were on the board.

The Orioles would get the run back in the fifth inning with the third home run off of Brandon McCarthy, this one by Nelson Cruz. In 5.1 innings, Brandon McCarthy allowed five runs on 11 hits while walking none and striking out eight. The three home runs he allowed accounted for four of the five runs he allowed.

In the sixth inning, a Brian McCann single and walk by Chase Headley would knock Jimenez out of the game. With one out, Chris Young walked and Stephen Drew hit a fly ball deep enough to score one run and pull the Yankees within three. In the seventh inning, Darren O’Day got two outs before Derek Jeter reached on a soft single down the third base line. Andrew Miller would come in to face Brian McCann but McCann would jump on a 1-0 pitch and hit his 23rd home run of the season, a two-run home run to make it a one-run ballgame.

Riich Hill and Esmil Rogers pieced together the sixth and seventh innings before the two best in the bullpen created some fr Also looking to keep the game at one, David Robertson came on with the Yankees franchise history.

Dellin Betances would allow a pair of singles but he also registered a pair of strikeouts. The strikeouts of Jimmy Paredes and Nick Hundley would give the 2014 New York Yankees 1,318 strikeouts as a team, tying themselves with the 2012 New York Yankees. Looking to continue keeping the deficit at one, David Robertson came on for the ninth inning. After giving up a pair of singles with one out, he would get the last two outs including a strikeout of Jonathan Schoop.

The strikeout of Schoop set the Yankees single season record with 1,319.

In the ninth inning against Zach Britton, Brett Gardner would reach as the potential tying run on an infield single. This gave Derek Jeter the chance to be the hero but the story would not be written that way as he struck out to end the game. The Yankees elimination number sits at one.
