Baltimore Orioles 9 — New York Yankees 5

The Yankees scored early with two outs when Chase Headley hit a single off of Bud Norris. Mark Teixeira would follow with a double to right field that scored Headley all the way from first base. The Yankees would plate another with a solo home run to right field by Stephen Drew. Bud Norris would strike out the next five Yankees before he served up another long ball. Chase Headley would snap the strikeout streak of Norris with a solo home run but Norris would bounce back and strikeout Mark Teixeira. After three innings, the Yankees had a three-run lead and Shane Greene was in control.

For Greene, he loaded the bases in the third inning with a single and a pair of walks. He would not fair so well in the fourth inning.

Nelson Cruz and Steve Clevenger opened the fourth inning with a pair of singles. After Greene got the first out of the inning, Kelly Johnson would walk to load the bases and Ryan Flaherty would make it a one-run game with a double to right field. Caleb Joseph would strike out for the second out but Shane Greene would not be able to find the third out of the inning. Nick Markakis hit a single to score two, putting the Orioles ahead by one. David Lough hit a triple to right field that scored Markakis and put the Orioles ahead by two. A bunt single by Adam Jones put the Orioles ahead by three and ended Shane Greene’s day on the mound.

In just 3.2 innings, Shane Greene allowed six runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out five.

After a walk to Stephen Drew in the fourth inning, Bud Norris retired nine in a row to settle down after a rough first three innings. He would go six and had a three-run lead. The Orioles would add three more runs in the eighth inning against David Phelps and the Yankees would attempt to get back into the game.

With two outs in the eighth inning, Chase Headley hit a single to center field, his third hit of the game. Mark Teixeira would follow with his second extra-base hit of the game, a two-run home run off the right field foul pole to pull the Yankees within four. Francisco Cervelli would walk and pinch-hitter Jose Pirela hit a single to right field but Chris Young would ground out to end the inning.

The Yankees would go down in order in the ninth inning with Derek Jeter standing on deck. Today’s loss was the loss that officially eliminated the Yankees from postseason contention.
