Yankees game 159: 10,000 Ws and a postseason ticket

Boston Red Sox 1 – New York Yankees 4

With the postseason within reach and win 10,000 for the franchise in reach, the Yankees came through.

After a scoreless first inning by CC Sabathia and Rich Hill, the Yankees were able to put the Yankees ahead early for the first time in this four-game series. Carlos Beltran went the other way, hitting a solo home run to right field to put the Yankees on the board.

Among two outs, John Ryan Murphy and Didi Gregorius worked walks against Hill. With two outs, Brendan Ryan came through with a single to left field, scoring Murphy and putting the Yankees ahead by two.

In the third inning, the Red Sox got two on, but CC Sabathia got a ground ball to Rob Refsnyder to start a double play. In the fourth inning, Travis Shaw got on with a leadoff single but a ground out to third baseman Brendan Ryan started an around-the-horn double play to finish off that inning as well.

The Boston Red Sox got themselves on the board with three singles in the fifth inning, the third hit coming from Mookie Betts. The second out came on a ground out and an intentional walk to Xander Bogaerts put the pressure on Travis Shaw. The Red Sox first baseman ended up flying out to center field and the Yankees escaped the inning with the lead.

In five innings, CC Sabathia allowed one run on six hits while walking three and striking out three.

Adam Warren started the year in the rotation, joined the bullpen to help them and then briefly returned to the rotation. Tonight, he came out of the bullpen in relief. After getting the first two outs, Deven Marrero walked on a close pitch to put the tying run on base. Sandy Leon hit a ground ball through the middle but Adam Warren threw his arm behind his back and caught the ground ball, for the easy put out at first base to preserve the lead.

After another scoreless inning by Adam Warren, a Baby Bomber provided insurance. With one out against Jean Machi, Greg Bird took him deep for a solo home run into right center field.

Adam Warren followed with another scoreless inning of work as he was dominant in relief. In three scoreless innings, Adam Warren surrendered one hit and one walk while striking out three.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Heath Hembree took the mound and the first pitch he threw to Rob Refsnyder was not coming back. The Yankees’ rookie second baseman hit a home run deep into left field, reaching the bleachers for a solo home run.

With the three-run lead, Dellin Betances got the call for the ninth inning. He started with a strikeout of Deven Marrero. The next out came on a pop out to third base. The final out came on a strikeout of Josh Rutledge, ending the game.

Not only did the Yankees win the game; the Yankees won the 10,000th win in franchise history and the Yankees also clinched a Wild Card berth, ensuring they will see postseason baseball for the first time in two years.

The strikeout of Rutledge was the 589th of the year for the bullpen, tying the MLB record.

Congratulations to the New York Yankees.
