Yankees game 160: Yankees open final series with win

New York Yankees 3 — Boston Red Sox 2

The Yankees looked to keep rolling from the emotional high with the last series of the 2014 season.

Chris Capuano and a lineup of mostly bench players were given the task of starting the series in Boston strong. After benefiting from instant replay catching Yoenis Cespedes briefly off of second base to end the first inning, Allen Craig hit a single to left field and Chris Young bobbled it, allowing Craig to go to second base. Then with two outs, Bryce Brentz hit a single to left field and Craig scored to put the first run on the board.

For the Red Sox, Steven Wright started the game and the difficulty that comes with Wright is he is a knuckleball pitcher. Knuckleball pitchers can create problems for catchers.

After striking out Jose Pirela, Wright would also strike out Eury Perez but the knuckleball would hit off the glove of catcher Dan Butler and Perez reached on the passed ball. He would advance to second on another passed ball and scored on a single by Francisco Cervelli, tying the game at one. After a Chris Young single, John Ryan Murphy would hit a ground ball to Xander Bogaerts and after the force at second base, second baseman Mookie Betts would make a wide throw of first base and Cervelli would score and the Yankees had the lead.

After two scoreless innings by Capuano and Wright, the Red Sox pitcher would exit the game in the sixth and Matt Barnes would take over.

Without the threat of the knuckleball, the hard-throwing Barnes would be hit hard. John Ryan Murphy hit a double to right field and Austin Romine followed with a single to center field that put runners on first and third. Brendan Ryan would strike out but Zelous Wheeler would come through with a sacrifice fly.

Chris Capuano would get the first two outs in the seventh inning before being replaced. In 6.2 innings, Chris Capuano allowed one unearned run on four hits without a walk and striking out five. Shawn Kelley would come in and on the first pitch, Rusney Castillo put a solo home run into the light tower on top of the Green Monster. Kelley would finish the inning but the Red Sox were within one.

Adam Warren came on in the eighth inning. He would strike out pinch-hitter Jemile Weeks and pinch-hitter Daniel Nava before getting a fly out to end the inning. David Robertson would give up a single to Bogaerts to start the ninth inning. On a steal of second base, Bogaerts knocked the ball out of the glove of Pirela and reached second base on a questionable error decision. David Robertson bounced back with a pair of strikeouts of Yoenis Cespedes and Allen Craig. Garin Cecchini would fly out to end the game.
