New York Yankees 3 — Houston Astros 2
The Yankees snapped their four-game losing streak with tonight’s 3-2 win over the Houston Astros.
The game would remain scoreless through the first three innings but the Yankees got it going in the fourth inning against Astros starter Brett Oberholtzer. After one out, Robinson Cano hit a single to right field. Alfonso Soriano would walk and Mark Reynolds would hit a single to left field. Left fielder Trevor Crowe would field the ball and when he tried to get Cano at home, the throw would be cut off by third baseman Matt Dominguez. The Astros third baseman would still try to get the runner at home but a wild throw would allow Soriano and Reynolds to advance into scoring position. The error helped David Adams, the next batter, bring in two runs with a double off the top of the right field wall, just missing a home run.
After a leadoff single in the third inning, Adam Warren would retire the next nine he faced to finish his start of the night. Adam Warren provided five scoreless innings with just two hits while walking one and striking out four. David Phelps would start the sixth inning and would have a scoreless sixth inning. Phelps would start the seventh inning and would exit with two on and two out. Joba Chamberlain got the call to clean up the mess.
Pinch-hitter Brett Wallace would hit a two-run double to deep center field and the Yankees three-run lead was reduced to just one. Chamberlain would get Matt Dominguez to fly out with the bases loaded but the lead was slimmer but intact. Preston Claiborne got the call for the eighth inning. He started the inning by walking designated hitter Marc Krauss. Pinch-runner Jake Elmore would be constantly on the mind of Claiborne’s through the remainder of the inning as he kept checking on him at first base. Eventually it would pay off as J.R. Murphy would make a poor throw to David Adams but the Yankees second baseman for tonight made a nice pick of the throw and put the tagon Elmore to catch him stealing and end the eighth inning.
With the looming reality of a life without the great Mariano Rivera, the Yankees could possibly have taken a glimpse into their future tonight, David Robertson the closer. With one pitch, L.J. Hoes would ground out to second base for the first out. On two pitches, Carlos Corporan would ground out sharply to Brendan Ryan for two outs. The final out came on some vintage David Robertson, with his sharp curveball getting Brett Wallace to strikeout, nailing down the third save of the season for David Robertson.
