Yankees game 160: Home field will wait in loss

New York Yankees 2 – Baltimore Orioles 9

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Yankees fell flat with the bats and the arms.

After a scoreless inning by the Yankees bats, Ivan Nova took the mound and struggled out of the gate. Nolan Reimold and Gerardo Parra got on base with a pair of singles. Manny Machado came up with runners on the corners but grounded into a double play. A run scored but the Yankees took the two outs for the price of one run. Two more Orioles reached base but Nova kept the damage to one.

The Yankees had the ideal situation for tying the game in the second inning.

Chris Young came up against Wei-Yin Chen and led off with a triple. Falling behind 0-2, Chase Headley popped out to the first baseman, Young stayed on third. On four pitches, John Ryan Murphy was called out on strikes looking. Then with two outs and Young still on third, Jose Pirela completed the exercise in futility with runners in scoring position when he popped out to J.J. Hardy, ending the inning.

In the third inning, Brendan Ryan got a one-out single but was gunned down at third base after Brett Gardner hit a single to left field.

In the bottom half of the third inning, Nolan Reimold got on base the hard way when he was hit by a pitch. Gerardo Parra followed with a double to put two in scoring position and a ground out by Manny Machado scored the Orioles’ second run of the game.

In the fourth inning, Chris Young reached with one out when Wei-Yin Chen made a poor throw to first base. Chase Headley walked to put two on base but John Ryan Murphy flew out to right field for the second out. Jose Pirela popped out to second base to strand two in the inning.

Manny Machado added another run in the fifth inning when he hit a solo home run to left center field. Nova returned for the sixth inning and gave up two singles with two outs before Chasen Shreve took over. The struggling lefty gave up three run-scoring singles to Gerardo Parra, Manny Machado and Chris Davis. Another run scored on a wild pitch and by the end of the sixth inning, the Orioles were ahead 7-0.

Overall, Ivan Nova went 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks. He struck out four but this was not a good outing to finish the regular season on.

The Yankees rallied in the seventh inning, despite the game appearing out of hand. John Ryan Murphy led off with a walk. A single by Jose Pirela knocked Chen out of the game and Brad Brach came in for relief. He walked pinch-hitter Greg Bird but got pinch-hitter Didi Gregorius to strikeout. Brett Gardner brought in the first Yankees run on a fielder’s choice ground out. Rob Refsnyder hit a single to center field. Reliever Mychal Givens came in for Alex Rodriguez and got him to strikeout to quell the Yankees brief momentum.

Reliever Nick Goody came in for the eighth inning and gave up two runs on three hits, the third hit, a two-run double by Gerardo Parra to give them a 9-2 lead that was the final score of this game.

With this loss, the Yankees still fight for home field in the Wild Card game with their second game later tonight.

For those cheering firsts, outfielder Rico Noel got an infield single in the ninth inning, his first major league hit.
