Yankees game 161: Wild pitch decides second of doubleheader

New York Yankees 3 – Baltimore Orioles 4

A wild eighth decided tonight’s second game of the doubleheader.

On the second pitch from Luis Severino, Nolan Reimold put the Orioles ahead with a solo home run to left field.

Gerardo Parra followed with a single but was caught stealing second. After Manny Machado struck out, Chris Davis was hit by a pitch on the foot. Steve Pearce followed with a double to left field that scored Davis and put the Orioles ahead by two.

In the second inning, Ubaldo Jimenez hit Brian McCann on the foot, in nearly the same fashion that Davis was hit, so he was awarded first base. Greg Bird hit a sharp single that deflected off the first baseman’s glove, putting runners on the corners with no outs. After a strikeout of Rob Refsnyder, Didi Gregorius hit a fly ball to right center that was deep enough to plate the first run for the Yankees.

After a scoreless inning by Severino, he got two outs in the third inning before Manny Machado added another run to the scoreboard on a solo home run to left field.

Ubaldo Jimenez pitched two scoreless innings but the fifth inning proved problematic. Rob Refsnyder started the fifth inning with a line drive down the third base line for a leadoff double. Didi Gregorius advanced Refsnyder to third on a single to right. Slade Heathcott brought home Gregorius on a fly ball to left field for a double that Steve Pearce could not come up with. Brendan Ryan grounded back to the pitcher for one out before Jacoby Ellsbury took a pitch off his lower back, loading the bases with one out. Then with two outs, Carlos Beltran worked it to a full count before walking in the tying run. Unfortunately, Brian McCann flew out to end the inning before the Yankees could claim the lead.

Luis Severino finished his start strong by retiring the last eight batters he faced. In seven innings, Luis Severino went seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.

Dellin Betances came in for the eighth inning with the game tied. Paul Janish led off the inning with a soft single to right field.

Janish advanced to second on a wild pitch by Betances before Nolan Reimold was struck out for the first out. Gerardo Parra reached on a bunt single to put runners on the corners. A second wild pitch by Betances went by McCann, allowing Janish to score the go-ahead run.

Betances struck out Machado for the second out. After an intentional walk of Chris Davis, Steve Pearce struck out to end the inning. Dellin Betances struck out three but two singles and two wild pitches were tremendous in this game.

In the ninth inning, closer Zach Britton got the first out before Alex Rodriguez hit a single to left field as the potential tying run. Pinch-runner Rico Noel came on but he was caught off of first and picked off for the second out. Chase Headley grounded out for the final out as the Yankees were swept in today’s doubleheader.

Home field for the Wild Card game appears to be heading towards game 162, the official final game of the season, for the decision.
