Yankees game 162: Pineda finishes strong in Jeter’s final finale

New York Yankees 9 — Boston Red Sox 5

Michael Pineda pitched six plus strong to end Jeter’s final season with a win.

After the ceremony in honor of Derek Jeter, in the words of The Captain, “we got a game to play.” In the first inning, against Clay Buchholz, Derek Jeter would be the second of three outs in the inning, a line out to shortstop Jemile Weeks. Michael Pineda would give up a single to start the game but proceeded to strike out the next three batters he faced.

Michael Pineda would go on a roll, retiring the next 10 batters faced, four on strikeouts. Clay Buchholz would pitch a scoreless second but he would not fare so well in the third.

Francisco Cervelli would walk to start the third inning but Chris Young would strike out. Ichiro Suzuki followed a Jose Pirela single with a two-run triple into the deepest part of Fenway Park, the triangle in center field. Derek Jeter would come in and hit a high chopper off the plate and he would successfully bring home Ichiro with an infield single. With a nod of his head, Derek Jeter acknowledged that now was the time.

With a hug of Brian McCann, Derek Jeter made his way off the field for the last time. He acknowledged the Red Sox, pitcher Clay Buchholz and his team before waving and tipping his cap in respect to the Fenway Park fans, thanking them for the good times and the bad times as a respected rival.

The game continued with a Brett Gardner double that put runners on second and third. McCann would score on a sacrifice fly and just like that the Yankees jumped out to an early three-run lead. In the top of the seventh, Clay Buchholz would be replaced by the bullpen and the wheels would fall off of this game.

With Craig Breslow on the mound, Francisco Cervelli and Chris Young followed with a single before Jose Pirela hit a ringing double off the monster, scoring Cervelli and Young to put two on the scoreboard. Eury Perez followed with a single and John Ryan Murphy followed with a single of his own, this one scoring the Yankees seventh run of the game. Drake Britton would take over and pinch-hitter Austin Romine hit a double to center field that scored another run. Britton would get Mark Teixeira to line out sharply for the first out of the inning but Chase Headley would hit a run-scoring single to right field and when the inning ended, the Yankees were ahead by nine.

Michael Pineda would get one out in the seventh inning before a single knocked him out of a great start. Esmil Rogers followed Pineda with some erratic pitching as a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases. He would strike out Bryce Brentz but a double by catcher Dan Butler would score three runs because Eury Perez bobbled it in right field. Rogers would walk one more batter and he would be replaced by Adam Warren. He would give up a two-run double before getting the last out.

One run in the five-run seventh would be charged to Pineda. In 6.1 innings, Michael Pineda allowed one run on three hits while walking none and striking out 10.

Adam Warren and David Phelps pitched a strong eighth and ninth inning, respectively. They each struck out two and the final out of the game came on a fly out to left field.

Until next season Yankees fans. But for now, enjoy the offseason and the pursuit for the 28th championship begins again.
