Yankees Game 17: Jays avoid sweep in finale

New York Yankees 4 — Toronto Blue Jays 8

Pitching struggles in today’s 8-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Ivan Nova started today’s game in an attempt to complete the sweep for the Yankees. A pair of singles put Nova in early trouble. With Edwin Encarnacion prominently pulling pitches, the infield was shifted heavily on the third base side of the field. A ground ball up the middle to Robinson Cano would be tossed to the distant Eduardo Nunez to try and complete a very difficult double play that resulted in Nunez’s second error of the season with an errant throw in a play that the run would score anyway. Another leadoff hit in the second inning would go on to score putting Nova in an early deficit.

Chris Stewart would cut the deficit in half with a laser of a home run off the screen on the left field foul pole. This was his first home run of the season.

In the third inning, Jose Bautista led off the inning with a single. Edwin Encarnacion looked to hit what could be at least a double to left field but the seemingly nicknamed “Boo,” earned his nickname. Vernon Wells, manning left field, made a leaping catch at the wall and robbed Encarnacion of the hit and would throw the ball in to complete the 7-4-3 double play, doubling off Jose Bauista.

Until the sixth inning, Nova was holding the Jays off the scoreboard. A leadoff walk and double in the sixth would end Nova’s start. With two on and no out, Boone Logan would be called on to face outfielder Colby Rasmus. The left-handed swinging outfielder hit it into left field to bring in a run. David Phelps would replace Logan after his one batter and didn’t do much better. Brett Lawrie hit a double into the left field corner to put the Jays ahead by one. Former Yankee Melky Cabrera would single in Lawrie to put the Jays ahead by two. Phelps would give up two more runs in the seventh inning when catcher J.P. Arencibia hit a two-run home run into center field.

Ivan Nova finished with five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, four walks, and five strikeouts. Boone Logan, who could not get the one batter he faced out, allowed one run on one hit and was tagged with the loss. David Phelps pitched three innings and gave up three runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Three singles in the fifth inning against starter Josh Johnson gave the Yankees a prime opportunity to score. With two outs, Josh Johnson appeared to lose the strike zone. Seven consecutive balls to Lyle Overbay and Eduardo Nunez brought in two runs but that was all they could manage in the inning.

Vernon Wells finished the series against his former team with seven hits in 15 at-bats (.467) with two home runs and three runs batted in. Brett Gardner extended his hitting streak to eight with his two hits today.

Win – Brett Cecil (1-0)

Loss – Boone Logan (0-1)
