Yankees game 17: Pineda, Teixeira dominate Mets in opener

New York Mets 1 – New York Yankees 6

The Subway Series started early this season, first round in the Bronx.

With one out against Jacob deGrom, Brett Gardner got a single for the first hit. One out later, Mark Teixeira would put one into the short porch for a two-run home run, his sixth home run of the season.

In the third inning, the Yankees would get to deGrom one more time. Jacoby Ellsbury would take advantage of the short porch with a line drive home run to right field, his first of the season. Brett Gardner would get a hit but would fail on testing the arm of former teammate Curtis Granderson, who threw Gardner out at second. Regrettable error in judgment for Gardner, as Alex Rodriguez walked in front of the slugging Mark Teixeira. The Yankees switch-hitting first baseman would continue to tear the cover off the baseball in an unusually hot April. The second two-run home run for Teixeira extended the lead to five.

On the other side, Michael Pineda was dominant. Through the first four innings, Pineda allowed one hit while striking out four. He would give up a pair of hits in the fifth inning but stranded two runners in scoring position with a strikeout and a ground out. The Mets would get one against Pineda in the sixth inning. After a single by Granderson, Pineda would unleash a wild pitch that allowed him to advance to second. He would move over to third on a fly out and scored the Mets lone run on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Duda. Michael Pineda would give up a double to Granderson with two outs in the eighth inning before leaving the game to a great ovation from the Yankees fans in attendance.

In 7 2/3 innings, Michael Pineda allowed one run on five hits without a walk and seven strikeouts. Pineda made good use of his impressive changeup to finish off batters. His fastball was lively and his slider was sharp. Outstanding, ace-type outing from the big Michael Pineda.

In a negative note, the Yankees did load the bases in the seventh inning with no outs. Rookie Hansel Robles came on for the Mets and escaped with a pop out and a pair of strikeouts to keep the Yankees from blowing open the game.

The win by the Yankees extended their winning streak to four and snapped an 11-game winning streak by the Mets.
