Yankees game 19 preview (4/26/16)

The Yankees continue to claw their way out of the division basement with Luis Severino (0-2, 4.86 ERA) taking on A.J. Griffin (2-0, 3.18 ERA) in game two in Arlington. Severino is coming off his best outing of the year so far. He gave up two runs on seven hits through six innings against the A’s. The bull pen imploded, however, giving up five runs causing him to take a no decision. He will take on the Rangers for the first time with opponents hitting .352 against him this year after hitting just .229 in 2015.

“He’s a young man with a very good arm, and we need to get him on track to where he was last year,” Joe Girardi said. “There have been some location mistakes with him. At times he hasn’t had his slider, and that’s important to him.”

Griffin is off to a hot start, holding opponents to a .203 batting average. Righties are having an especially hard time, as they are hitting .129 against him. When there are runners in scoring position, his opponent’s average drops to .143. Making his start even more impressive is the fact he missed the last two years recovering from Tommy John. In three career starts against the Yanks, he is 2-0 with a 3.12 ERA.

Tidbits:

Severino has only walked one through 16.2 innings.

The Yankees are 7-0 when leading after seven innings and 0-8 when trailing.

Alex Rodriguez is three bases away from tying Pete Rose for seventh all time.
