Yankees game 22 preview (4/30/16)

Well, last night wasn’t fun. Hopefully Michael Pineda (1-2, 6.95 ERA) can right the ship against Rick Porcello (4-0, 3.51 ERA) in game two tonight. Pineda has struggled so far this season, allowing 30 hits in 22 innings. His strikeouts rank fourth in the AL among pitchers with four or more starts, however, his homers are tied for the Major League lead.

“Pineda didn’t have the movement on the fastball, he didn’t have the cut on it today,” Joe Girardi said after Sunday’s start. “For whatever reason, he didn’t have it. Obviously, his slider was pretty good, he had nine strikeouts. The four homers, too? It doesn’t make a lot of sense, but the lack of movement on his fastball and lack of location today is what killed him.”

Porcello is on a completely opposite trajectory as Pineda, having not lost a game this season. In his 11 career starts against the Yanks, he is 5-4 with a 3.66 ERA.

Tidbits:

Porcello has gone six plus innings in his past 12 starts.

Pineda is 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA in his last three starts at Fenway, issuing no walks with 23 K’s.

In his only career start against the Yanks in Boston, Porcello stuckout a career high 13 batters, which is tied for the most by a Sox starter since Pedro Martinez.
