Yankees Game 23: A-Rod not enough, Yankees get swept

New York Yankees 7 – Boston Red Sox 8

Looking to avoid the sweep, the Yankees called on Nathan Eovaldi tonight.

In the first inning, former Red Sox outfielder and current Yankees leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury got it going with a leadoff double. Brett Gardner sacrificed to advance Ellsbury to third for Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees designated hitter hit a ground ball behind third base but Travis Shaw made the play at home for the second out of the inning. Mark Teixeira ended the inning that had potential.

In the bottom half of the inning, Nathan Eovaldi hit a rough spot from the word go. Mookie Betts and Dustin Pedroia led off with a pair of singles to put runners on the corners. On a ground ball to third, Betts scored on the fielder’s choice. A strikeout and a pop out minimized the damage to one and in the third inning, the Yankees managed to get some offense going.

Ronald Torreyes led off the third with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Austin Romine. Jacoby Ellsbury went to left field for his first double and showed his line-to-line offense with a double down the right field line for a run-scoring double to tie the game. After a ground out, Alex Rodriguez hit a deep shot over the monster in center field for a two-run home run, giving the Yankees a two-run lead.

In need of a shut down inning, Nathan Eovalid was unable to provide that in the bottom half of the third.

After getting the first out, Dustin Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts got on base with a pair of singles and David Ortiz walked to load the bases. Hanley Ramirez hit a single to center just through the infield for a game-tying, two-run single. After a strikeout for the second out, Brock Holt hit a single to center field. On the single, Ortiz attempted to score and Hanley Ramirez tried reaching third. Ramirez was caught at third base but not before Ortiz just touched home in time to give the Red Sox the one-run lead.

In the fifth inning, Jacoby Ellsbury got on base the hard way when he was hit by a pitch with one out. Brett Gardner followed with a walk and Alex Rodriguez kept the hot bat going when he hit a booming double to center field, just shy of a home run. Rodriguez settled for a two-run double. Mark Teixeira followed with a run-scoring single to give the Yankees a two-run lead.

Like the third inning, Eovaldi needed another shut down inning in the fifth and failed to come through.

David Ortiz led off with a single and after a fielder’s choice got the first out, Travis Shaw hit a rocket into right field for a game-tying, two-run home run. Eovaldi got the last two outs of the inning before walking the first batter of the sixth inning, ending his night.

In five innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed six runs on 10 hits while walking three and striking out three.

After a scoreless sixth inning by Ivan Nova, he got the first two outs around a single by Travis Shaw before the Yankees called on Dellin Betances.

On the first pitch from Dellin Betances, Christian Vazquez took him deep for a two-run home run to give the Red Sox the lead. Including tonight’s home run, Betances has given up a home run in three straight outings for the first time.

The Yankees scored a run in the eighth inning thanks to a wild pitch by Koji Uehara but Craig Kimbrel set the Yankees down in order to notch a save in a back-and-forth game that ultimately went the Red Sox way. With the win, the Yankees were swept in Boston and have lost five in a row.

Win – David Price (4-0)

Loss – Ivan Nova (1-1)

Save – Craig Kimbrel (8)
