Yankees game 25: Sweep the Sox in Fenway

New York Yankees 8 – Boston Red Sox 5

With the sweep in sight, the Yankees turned to Adam Warren on Sunday night.

Opposing Warren for the Red Sox is Joe Kelly. Jacoby Ellsbury started with a leadoff single. Two outs later, Mark Teixeira went to left field for a two-run home run. For Teixeira, that was his ninth home run of the season.

The Yankees would get on the board again in the third inning with two outs. With Ellsbury and Alex Rodriguez on base after a pair of singles, Brian McCann would hit a two-run double to center. Carlos Beltran would follow with a run-scoring double of his own, down the right field line. Just like that, the Yankees took a strong five-run lead. Through the first three innings, Adam Warren was putting his infield to good use, generating seven ground outs and an infield pop out. The Red Sox would get their first hit, a double to left-center by Mookie Betts but Warren would keep them off the board. The Yankees would threaten scoring in the fourth and fifth inning but would be stranded with two runners on base each inning. The Yankees would add on more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Didi Gregorius and Jacoby Ellsbury would get on base with a pair of singles against the lefty Craig Breslow. Still against the lefty, Brett Gardner would go deep on Breslow with a three-run home run to right field, extending the Yankees lead to eight.

Adam Warren would pitch one more scoreless fifth inning before the sizable lead looked far less sizable.

After Warren got the first two outs of the sixth inning, Dustin Pedroia would hit a single to left field. David Ortiz would make use of the green monster with a double to left, scoring the Sox first run of the game. Tempers would ignite on a pitch inside to Hanley Ramirez, hitting him in the side. Pablo Sandoval would hit a single to left and the Red Sox scored their second run. Esmil Rogers would come in for Warren with two on and two out. Mike Napoli would go deep over the monster for a three-run home run that reduced the Yankees lead to just three. After the inning was over, nine batters came to the plate and the Yankees eight-run lead was reduced to just three.

In 5 2/3 innings, Adam Warren allowed four runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two. Warren reached 100 pitches and the pitching line for Warren is better than it appears. Two of the runs came after Warren exited the game.

Despite the struggle by Esmil Rogers to get the out in his inning of work, the bullpen was strong again. Justin Wilson would get two outs and David Carpenter would get two outs on one pitch too.

In the eighth inning, Jacoby Ellsbury came to the plate with a perfect night, four hits in four at-bats but Edward Mujica would not let him get a chance at hit number five as he hit Ellsbury with a pitch. Warnings were issued and the game would go on.

With a three-run lead in the ninth inning, it meant one thing.

Andrew Miller would walk the first batter he faced. He would strike out the next two before a walk and a throwing error by Chase Headley loaded the bases. With two outs and the three-run lead, Andrew Miller would get David Ortiz to fly out to Jacoby Ellsbury to end the game and the series. The Yankees swept the Red Sox in Fenway.
