Yankees Game 28: Offense lackluster as CC falls to 0-5

CC Sabathia struggled yet again in the Yankees 5-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Yankees lost their first series since April 15 against the Baltimore Orioles. The loss pushed Sabathia to 0-5 on the season. Though his performance was not great, the Yankee offense could not get anything going against Mark Buehrle, who beat the Yankees for the first time since May 2008.

Sabathia’s struggles are worrisome but all the blame cannot be forced on him. He has pitched better than his 0-5 record shows. His offense has scored a total of 13 runs in six starts.

The Yankees got the scoring started in the first inning. Chris Young, who singled earlier in the inning, scored on a Mark Teixeira ground out. Jose Pirela, who came back from injury, was the only other Yankee to reach third base in the game.

Sabathia gave up the lead in the second inning giving up a leadoff single, followed by a double by Chris Colabello. A batter late, Ezequiel Carrera singled both runners home to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead. Colabello then singled in Russell Martin in the fourth to extend Toronto’s lead. Colabello finished the night 4-for-4.

Former Yankee and Sabathia battery mate Russell Martin hit a solo home run in the sixth. Sabathia finished the night giving up four runs on nine hits and two walks. He also struck out four in 6.1 innings.

Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hit streak to nine with a fifth inning single. Pirela also showed signs of life in his bat. He was called up Wednesday to replace the injured Gregorio Petit. Pirela finished the day 2-for-4 with a single and a double.

The bullpen once again gave up another run in the eighth, courtesy of Ryan Goins triple off of Chasen Shreve.
