Yankees game 3: Four-run inning too much for CC, Yankees

Toronto Blue Jays 6 — New York Yankees 3

CC Sabathia took the mound in the rubber match with the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.

In the first inning, Sabathia would do something Tanaka and Pineda did, have a perfect first inning that featured strikeouts of Reyes and Bautista.

After the smooth first inning, Sabathia would like a redo on the second.

Edwin Encarnacion would go against the shift with a single to right field. Josh Donaldson would follow with a single of his own. Danny Valencia would hit an infield single, deflected off the glove of Sabathia, that loaded the bases and Kevin Pillar would hit a run-scoring single to put the Jays on the board. Steve Tolleson and Devon Travis would hit a pair of productive run-scoring outs and Jose Reyes would finish off the four-run inning with a single of his own.

The Yankees offense had a hard time with rookie Daniel Norris.

The first Yankees hit came in the third inning, when Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-out single to center field but he would be caught stealing second, ending the inning. In the fourth inning, Alex Rodriguez led off with a walk and Carlos Beltran hit a ringing double to left field, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Mark Teixeira would hit a rocket of a line drive but third baseman Donaldson snagged the line drive, preventing a run from scoring. Chase Headley would be struck out looking and Chris Young would pop out to second, ending a high chance of scoring with two in scoring position and no outs.

The Yankees would score their first run of the game in the fifth inning when Didi Gregorius hit a one-out single after the John Ryan Murphy double, but Gregorius would be caught off of second base for the second out of the inning. The real burst of offense came from the sixth inning and it came from the lightning rod.

Against Norris, Alex Rodriguez would get a hold of a 1-0 pitch and put it deep into the left field seats for his first home run since September 20, 2013. The solo home run would trigger the offense as one batter later; Mark Teixeira would hit his first home run of the season. The solo blast by Mark Teixeira would be a milestone for the Yankees first baseman. It would be his 1000t run scored of his career and his 500t run batted in as a New York Yankee. Chris Young would be hit by the last pitch by Daniel Norris. John Ryan Murphy would hit a double but this rally would end on a strikeout of pinch-hitter Stephen Drew.

CC Sabathia gave up an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning and needed the assistance of Esmil Rogers to finish off his first start of the season. In 5 2/3 innings, CC Sabathia allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits but walked none and struck out eight.

Esmil Rogers pitched through the seventh inning but the eighth inning would be just too much. After getting the first two outs, Edwin Encarnacion would hit his second home run of the season, hitting it off the back of the visitor’s bullpen to extend the Blue Jays lead to three and putting the last run on the board for the game.

The Yankees lose the three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
