Yankees game 30 preview (5/9/16)

The defending World Series Champs come into the Bronx for a four game set with Ivan Nova (1-1, 5.14 ERA) and Chris Young (1-4, 5.76 ERA) kicking things off. Nova steps into the rotation for the injured CC Sabathia for his first start since last October. He has made sixth relief appearances this year, going four innings in two of them. The last time he faced the Royals was back in 2013. He allowed just one run on five hits through eight innings and got the win. Joe Girardi says he is stretched out to about 75 pitches.

“I want to pitch,” Nova said. “I want to pitch every time I go. I just gotta go out there and put up some numbers. I know I’m pitching one game and we’ll see what happens after that.”

Young is coming off a 4.2 inning outing against the Nationals where he gave up two runs on five hits, two of them homers.  Homers have been a problem for the 36 year old this season, as 13 of his 19 runs allowed have come via the long ball. He gave up two homers last season in Yankee Stadium, including the decisive three run shot from Alex Rodriguez that won the game 4-2 for the Bombers.

Tidbits:

Young hasn’t won on the road since August 23, 2015, and is 0-3 with an 8.36 ERA this season outside of KC.

Mark Teixeira has an .812 OPS against Young with two homers and four RBIs.

The Yanks swept the three game series in the Bronx last season.
