New York Yankees – Colorado Rockies
Rain could not dampen the bat of Robinson Cano in today’s 3-1 win over the Colorado Rockies.
The Yankees sent CC Sabathia to the mound for this rubber game and looked strong in a rain-shortened appearance. The lone run that Sabathia allowed came in the first inning. Right fielder Eric Young Jr. would score on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Carlos Gonzalez.
The Yankees brought in the first run on the hero from yesterday, Vernon Wells. With Jayson Nix on second, Vernon Wells would single to right field and bring home Nix. Then a productive series of at-bats in the fourth inning would give the Yankees a lead they would not relinquish. Former Rockie Chris Nelson would hit a double to the left field corner and move to third on Overbay’s groundout. Chris Stewart would hit a deep fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly and the lead.
Then the rain, a nearly two hour rain delay would take place after the fourth inning, knocking out both starting pitchers.
With the rain cleared and the tarp removed, new pitcher Adam Ottavino would be the new Rockies pitcher. After getting two outs, Ottavino would face Robinson Cano and Cano would come through with an insurance run. On a 2-0 pitch, Robinson Cano sent the slider into the bullpen in right field for his ninth home run of the season.
The bullpen would take over after the rain delay and the first arm out was Adam Warren. The right-hander gave the Yankees 1.2 innings of hitless baseball but would need some help after a pair of walks put the tying run on first. Boone Logan would be given the task of getting Carlos Gonzalez out and would get him to ground out to first. Preston Claiborne got the seventh inning but only got two outs on a double play. He would leave the game with two on and two out. David Robertson would bail out Claiborne with a strikeout of Todd Helton.
Robertson would proceed to get through the eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts. Mariano Rivera would come on for the save opportunity in the ninth. A batter would reach base when hit by a pitch but Rivera would shut the door for his 13th save of the season.
CC Sabathia’s rain-shortened start featured four innings with one run allowed on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts. For Adam Warren, this was the first MLB win of his career.
