New York Yankees 5 — Milwaukee Brewers 3

In Masahiro Tanaka‘s first visit to a National League ballpark, Tanaka hit one rough spot in a good start.

Through the first three innings, Tanaka and Milwaukee Brewers starter, Yovani Gallardo, were dominating by allowing just one hit each. In the fourth inning, the Yankees got to Gallardo. Carlos Beltran would start with a walk and with one out, Brian McCann hit a single up the middle. Yangervis Solarte would jump on a hanging curve and hit his second home run of his career. The three-run home run went to right field and it was out of the reach of Logan Schafer. Brian Roberts would keep hitting when he followed Brett Gardner‘s single with a double to right field.

The Yankees give Masahiro Tanaka a four-run lead. More than enough right?

Tanaka would make quick work of the Brewers the second time through the lineup but in the sixth inning, the third time through the lineup, the Brewers got to Tanaka. Walking in the first and singling in the third, Carlos Gomez would make it a perfect night against Tanaka with a leadoff double in the fifth. Second baseman Scooter Gennett would follow it with a double of his own and the Brewers were on the board. Catcher Jonathan Lucroy would hit a run-scoring single and the four-run lead was now a two-run lead. Tanaka would generate a double play before striking out Mark Reynolds looking to stop the bleeding.

Masahiro Tanaka would get one more out in the seventh before a pair of singles ended his night. In 6.1 innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed two runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out seven. In three at-bats, Masahiro Tanaka struck out all three times but would step away from the box without harm.

The bullpen did not have much work to do tonight but they did it great. In the seventh inning with two on and one out, Adam Warren would strike out pinch hitter Lyle Overbay and baserunner Logan Schafer would be thrown out attempting to steal second base and just like that, the inning was over. Warren would get the next three outs in the eighth inning and hand the game over to the closer.

David Robertson would give up a solo home run to Mark Reynolds but struck out three on the way to his sixth save of the season.

Win – Masahiro Tanaka (5-0)

Loss – Yovani Gallardo (2-2)

Save – David Robertson (6)
