Yankees game 36 preview (5/14/15)

After two tough luck losses, the Yanks go for the series split with Chase Whitley (1-1, 3.06 ERA) taking on Erasmo Ramirez (0-1, 8.38 ERA). This will be Whitley’s second start against Tampa Bay this season. He made his season debut against them on April 28 throwing five innings of one run, six hit ball in the win. His last time out against Baltimore he gave up five runs on six hits, three of them left the yard and he took the loss.

Ramirez has allowed just two runs in his last five relief appearances through nine innings. Those two runs came from a Mark Teixeira homer on Monday. His starts, however, are a different story. He has allowed a combined 10 runs in just 7 1/3 innings. He hasn’t been able to get out of the fourth inning in those two starts either. “In the first game I tried to be perfect, and in the second one I was fighting with my mechanics, and now I’m relaxed and focused on throwing strikes because that is all I want, and that is what I want to show to everyone. Not even just the team, but the fans and everyone who is looking at the game.”

Tidbits:

Ramirez has three relief appearances against the Yanks this season, Teixeira’s homer being the only runs he allowed in four innings.

In his last four starts Whitley has a 22/3 strikeout-to-walk ratio going 1-1 with a 2.28 ERA.

Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury are hitting .306 and .343 respectively.
