New York Yankees 0 — Cleveland Indians 1

David Phelps made one bad pitch in today’s 1-0 loss to the Cleveland Indians. The first game of a doubleheader today.

David Phelps got the nod for the first game today to makeup rained out games earlier this season. On a 2-2 pitch in the first inning, second baseman Jason Kipnis took Phelps deep for a solo home run. This home run to right field would prove to be the only run of the game. Besides the home run, David Phelps did more than anyone expected in today’s game. He gave the Yankees a quality start that saved the tired bullpen for the second game.

David Phelps went 6.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits with five walks and seven strikeouts. He threw a season-high 115 pitches.

Cleveland starter Justin Masterson would dominate the Yankees lineup. Masterson induced 10 groundouts over his nine inning effort. The best opportunity the Yankees had came in the second inning. With two outs, Chris Nelson would single, Corban Joseph would walk in his first major league at-bat, and Chris Stewart would single on a diving stop by Asdrubal Cabrera. The diving stop by the Cleveland shortstop likely prevented a run from scoring today.

Masterson won today’s pitcher’s duel, going nine innings with four hits, three walks, and nine strikeouts.

Win – Justin Masterson (6-2)

Loss – David Phelps (1-2)
